Senate hearing in Georgia highlights growing alarm over potential post-election meddling

A U.S. Senate hearing in Atlanta on Monday highlighted the fact that Democratic concerns about new voting laws are rapidly shifting to potential post-election meddling by state legislatures.

Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., was the first speaker to address the Senate Rules and Administration Committee as it met in a rare hearing outside of Washington, D.C. And he highlighted his recently introduced bill that will make it more difficult for partisan state lawmakers to remove members of local election boards. That’s one way that numerous state legislatures controlled by Republicans are making it easier for them to possibly overturn election results they don’t like.

A law passed in Georgia earlier this year, Senate Bill 202, has attracted national attention and much criticism due to provisions that make it harder to vote by mail, among other restrictions. But it also “allows partisan officials in the state Legislature to control our state board of elections and take over local elections. And it allows them to engage in these takeovers even while the votes are still being cast,” Warnock said.

“This is a recipe not only for voter suppression but for chaos in our democracy,” he said to the committee, chaired by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

1. This has always been the big issue, but people were so fixated on water

that it was ignored.

It drove me bananas. The water distraction was classic GOP misdirection.

2. I believe you're right.

The no water in line rule was nonsense because anyone going to vote on a 88 degree day can bring water to the polls. Plan ahead and share. I posted as much here a couple months ago and was roundly criticized by those who believed it was the most important issue facing future elections. I got 3 recs and about 50 comments telling me what an idiot I am to not understand how everyone has to hand out water to voters in line.

I did go on to say I don't want people handing out gifts of any kind to voters because water bottles, candy bars, and such can be labelled in support of a candidate. I believe the flags around a precinct mark a sacred "no campaign" zone where only voters should be allowed. No bringing lawn chairs, water bottles, or umbrellas for people, especially while wearing a t-shirt supporting an issue or candidate.

But what do I know? I don't understand how many voters pass out and die from dehydration while trying to vote for democrats. Republicans, apparently, don't have that problem.
