Full Statement:
JULY 21, 2021 PRESS RELEASE
Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement on the Republican recommendations to serve on the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol:
"The violent domestic attack on Congress on January 6th was the worst assault on the Capitol since the War of 1812 and the worst domestic assault on American Democracy since the Civil War. We are facing a radically new threat in the kinds of forces that combined to attack our government on January 6th. The future of our democracy is on the line. This assault was an attempt to overthrow the government.
"We need a comprehensive investigation as to who organized this attack, who paid for it, how they nearly succeeded in overthrowing a presidential election, why they did it and how we must organize ourselves to prevent anything like it from ever happening again.
"It had been our hope to establish a bipartisan, independent National Commission, but there is no prospect for that Commission at this time because of insufficient support from Republican Senators. Therefore, the House established the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Select Committee on the January 6th Insurrection will investigate and report upon the facts and causes of the terrorist mob attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. It will also be charged with reporting its findings, conclusions and recommendations for preventing future attacks.
"Monday evening, the Minority Leader recommended 5 Members to serve on the Select Committee. I have spoken with him this morning about the objections raised about Representatives Jim Banks and Jim Jordan and the impact their appointments may have on the integrity of the investigation. I also informed him that I was prepared to appoint Representatives Rodney Davis, Kelly Armstrong and Troy Nehls, and requested that he recommend two other Members.
"With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee.
"The unprecedented nature of January 6th demands this unprecedented decision."
Essentially she's saying that McCarthy, Jordan, and Banks can go F* off!

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has rejected two of Minority Leader Kevin McCarthys (R-Calif.) picks to serve on the Jan. 6 select committee, citing that the outspoken Republicans may jeopardize the integrity of the investigation.
McCarthy announced Monday that he would recommend Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Banks (R-Ind.), noting that the two Republicans and three others represent an array of viewpoints and opinions. Both Jordan and Banks voted against certifying the election of President Biden.
With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee, Pelosi said in a statement. The unprecedented nature of January 6th demands this unprecedented decision.
Pelosi, who as Speaker has final say on who can serve on a committee, said that she was prepared to appoint Representatives Rodney Davis, Kelly Armstrong and Troy E. Nehls.

(snip)
Because of how the committee was created, Ms. Pelosi will have final say on its membership. Her appointments including Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and Democratic Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (Miss.), the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee who will lead the panel reflected a real seriousness of purpose. In contrast, Mr. McCarthys choices seem solely designed to make a circus of the proceedings. Ringleader, of course, would be Mr. Jordan, a persistent if not terribly skillful disrupter and provocateur. Mr. Jordan, Mr. Banks and Mr. Nehls all voted against certifying the results of the election despite the absence of voter fraud or major irregularities. Their complicity in feeding Mr. Trumps lie about a stolen election is not compatible with any dispassionate investigation of the days events.

I suppose McCarthy can now instigate a showdown and create a clown show where he thinks he can spend the next couple weeks cycling through a list of the worst of the seditionist loons, one by one, including the likes of Brooks, Gosar, Nunes, etc. If he did do that, Pelosi should cut it off and go with what she has.

(23,971 posts)...expected McCarthy would do exactly this and then she could be rid of all 5 of them without looking "unreasonable."
If so, well played, Madame Speaker!

(2,786 posts)but the facts about the leadup to Jan 6 doesn't include the Biden Administration... That didn't happen until Jan 20th, right? So, in addition to all the other lies and misdirection in Banks' statement, was who was actually President at that time. That ought to go over well with TFG.

(27,438 posts)He would just use his position to get his face in front of a camera and turn the whole investigation into a circus with him as the master of ceremonies. We dont need someone who wont take the position seriously. Hed do this to protect Trump and all the other insurrectionists.

(12,582 posts)The second thing they will try to do is to muddy the waters by bringing the George Floyd protests and Antifa into the investigation.
Finally, they'll want a resolution prohibiting the committee from issuing subpoenas to any congressperson, Pence or T*****.
