ISLAMABAD (AP) The Taliban say they dont want to monopolize power, but they insist there wont be peace in Afghanistan until there is a new negotiated government in Kabul and President Ashraf Ghani is removed.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Taliban spokesman, Suhail Shaheen, who is also a member of the groups negotiating team, laid out the insurgents stance on what should come next in a country on the precipice.
The Taliban have swiftly captured territory in recent weeks, seized strategic border crossings and are threatening a number of provincial capitals, as the last U.S. and NATO soldiers leave Afghanistan. This week, the top U.S. military officer, Gen. Mark Milley, told a Pentagon press conference that the Taliban have strategic momentum, and he did not rule out a complete Taliban takeover. But he said it is not inevitable. I dont think the end game is yet written, he said.
Memories of the Talibans last time in power some 20 years ago, when they enforced a harsh brand of Islam that denied girls an education and barred women from work, have stoked fears of their return among many. Afghans who can afford it are applying by the thousands for visas to leave Afghanistan, fearing a violent descent into chaos. The U.S.-NATO withdrawal is more than 95% complete and due to be finished by Aug. 31.

In an interview with The Associated Press Thursday, July 22, 2021, Shaheen said the insurgent movement does not want to monopolize power, but there won't be peace until there is a new, negotiated government in Kabul and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is removed. Shaheen said women will be allowed to work, go to school, and participate in politics but will have to wear the hijab, or headscarf. (AP Photo/Alexander Zemlianichenko, Pool, File)

(1,832 posts)... and he did not call Afghanistan mujahideen fighters for "founding fathers". That honor was reserved for the Nicaraguan Contras, known for killing nuns and such.
BTW. President Joe Biden will meet with Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani in the White House now on Friday. This will end in many missleading memes as well...

As for women wearing the hijab, that is a great compromise over the inhumane burqa. The Taliban seem to have learned over the past 20 years that they were condemned over their harsh treatment of all women, not their religion. Let's hope it sticks.

No the Taliban didn't learn anything. They are trying to get back in power so they can continue doing as they did before.

that's what for.
MIC made billions - drug lords probably even more.
Of course having MORE US bases closer to Iran was part of the PNACers plan as well,
the $$$$ were just gravy . . .
Besides - US loves to play with it's military toys - even took the opportunity to wipe out a few mountain goats with a MOAB
as George Carlin said during one of his monologue rants . . .
"We just gotta be fuckin' with somebody!"
