DeSantis takes action against Ben & Jerry's for ending sales in Israeli-occupied areas

Source: The Hill

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is coming out against Ben & Jerry's over its recent decision to end sales of its ice cream in Israeli-occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem.

In a letter to the State Board of Administration of Florida, DeSantis urged the agency to place Ben & Jerry's on its Continued Examination Companies that Boycott Israel List. It also called for the same to be done to Unilever, which it noted is “a publicly traded company in which Florida holds multiple investments” and that also owns Ben & Jerry's.

He also called for the agency to initiate a process to place both entities on its Scrutinized Companies that Boycott Israel List and asked that he be provided with an update on the status of the process immediately.

The ice cream company drew nationwide attention last week when it announced it would be stopping sales of its ice cream in Israeli-occupied areas.

In earlier days of internet there was a Minneapolis underground music website that had a button with message "Do Not Click This Button". So of course you click the button and then get a little popup message "You've been added to the list"

Pretty sure B&J is very concerned.

As Florida hits 10,000 cases a day, experts seek more COVID data from state

https://www.tampabay.com/news/health/2021/07/23/as-covid-cases-climb-experts-question-floridas-pandemic-data/

Coronavirus cases have tripled in the past two weeks in Florida and there’s no sign the resurgent pandemic will slow down.

There were 73,119 new infections reported between July 16 and Thursday, according to the latest seven-day report released by the state on Friday. That’s an average of more than 10,000 infections per day, a number not seen since early February.

snip

Hospitalizations have also doubled in the past two weeks to nearly 800 confirmed admission every day, on average. Deaths have followed, increasing by 64 percent over the same time span, but still remain far below levels seen at the peak of the pandemic.

snip

At the same time, weekly vaccination rates continue to drop as new patients become harder and harder to reach. The number of first-time vaccine recipients fell to just over 100,000, the lowest since June.

snip

(and now Florida and DeSantis want to hide the data)

The Florida Department of Health also stopped sharing key demographic data points with the public, such as hospitalizations, infections in nursing homes, and county level infections and vaccinations by race, age and gender. At that time, health officials said this change reflected a new phase of the pandemic as cases fell.

The Commerce Clause describes an enumerated power listed in the United States Constitution (Article I, Section 8, Clause 3). The clause states that the United States Congress shall have power "to regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commerce_Clause#Substantial_Impact_on_Interstate_Commerce

States have no power to regulate interstate commerce.

It is not. 35 states have anti-BDS laws. Both blue and red states. The actions against the B&J anti-Israel boycott are just starting.

Five US states take aim at Ben & Jerry’s over settlement boycott

Officials in Florida, Texas, New York, New Jersey and Illinois reviewing whether move requires divestment from parent company Unilever under their various state laws.

Five US states have begun examining whether Ben & Jerry’s decision to stop selling its ice cream in Israeli settlements triggered laws passed in recent years to combat the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement targeting Israel.

There are 34 states in total that require their governments to stop doing business with companies that boycott Israel — and 21 of those explicitly include West Bank settlement boycotts in their definitions.

Of those 21 states, 12 are required to remove companies that engage in boycotts from state employee retirement investment funds — an action that experts say is far more damaging than simply ending contracts with a company for its goods and services.
