Alaskan coast 8.2 magnitude earthquake was the strongest one in decades, official says

Source: CNN

By Madeline Holcombe and Joe Sutton,

(CNN)The 8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck off Alaska's coast Wednesday night was the strongest one since 1964, an official told CNN.

The very strong quake was located about 56 miles (91 kilometers) east southeast of Perryville, Alaska, and happened around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.

At 29 miles deep (46.7 km), the earthquake is considered shallow.

"This event was felt throughout the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak," according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.

He said the street in front of his house split open and one side ended up 12 ft over the other side. His brother was a baby, and screaming, and rolling from one side of the crib to another.

9. All these quakes in the Ring Of Fire, and still no movement in the fault off Vancouver

Jul 2021

The closest Vancouver has gotten to a major quake was when Seattle got one about 15-20 years ago, otherwise, no major seismic activity for around 300 years.

Vancouver is going to be in a world of hurt whenever that section of the fault does move, and most of the area’s residents are wholly unprepared for a major quake.

13. Tsunami warning lifted for southern Alaska after 8.2 quake offshore
Thu Jul 29, 2021, 01:34 PM
Jul 2021

A major, shallow earthquake off the Alaskan peninsula late Wednesday prompted tsunami warnings for much of the Gulf of Alaska coastline. They were lifted several hours later, though an advisory remained in effect. The region was being hit with numerous aftershocks. Only small waves were generated.

A tsunami watch issued for Hawaii was later cancelled.

There were no initial reports of injuries or damage.

The United States Geological Survey said the 8.2 quake hit 56 miles east-southeast of the tiny town of Perryville at 10:15 p.m. local time at a depth of about 21 miles. Perryville is some 500 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska's biggest city. There were no warnings issued for Anchorage.
