Storm survey teams from the National Weather Service will be busy after a wild night of weather Thursday that included 12 tornado warnings in New Jersey.
The most significant amount of damage in New Jersey is suspected to have taken place on the north end of Long Beach Island, where the weather service said it received reports of a roof being torn off a house and damage to surrounding structures.
Photos and video show fallen power lines, overturned boats, damage to the roof and siding of homes as well as fences torn out of the ground in the High Bar Harbor section of Barnegat Light after a fierce storm blew through late Thursday.
From the damage reports, we strongly suspect its a tornado, said Dean Iovino, a lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in Mouny Holly

(9,258 posts)One touched down in lower Bucks County and did much damage to a car dealership. Up my way theres film of the clouds trying to form funnels but nothing on the ground. Scary stuff.

(35,324 posts)yesterday afternoon. Each one pretty much destroyed a house. They are pretty rare around here when they do touch down they don't travel far the hills break them up. I experianced one about 67 years ago I was 6 years old. It touched down for maybe 200 yards. It took out a couple garages and trees on our road but left the homes untouched.

(14,862 posts)1 tornado .....well I remember one in the '80's in Ft Lee (town right at the beginning or end of the GW Bridge) on the NJ side. We lived not too far away across the Hudson River in waaaay upper Manhattan.
This is the only one I remember. Being a bit of a weather buff - I think I'd remember something that unusual for our area! But maybe not.
From mid '90s backwards they seem to only show up once every 8-10 years a cording to a chart.
In another chart none were recorded in the '50's, or '60s which I find fascinating.
Suddenly in the '00s we started getting one or two almost every year between NYC proper (the 5 Burroughs), and just across the Hudson Bay or River (relatively further up north), or just above northern city line all on the NJ side
E1s have torn up roofs, knocked down trees (some on to parked cars) in Brooklyn. And an a single F2 Staten Is, and Brooklyn.
It's still unusual for us! Even an F0, F1. 😳

That #7 in the above PNS (Public Information Statement) at Grant and the Boulevard up in NE Philly was probably insane given how that is a huge intersection in the city.
