Fauci: US unlikely to return to lockdowns
Source: The Hill
Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Biden's chief medical adviser, said on Sunday that he does not think the United States will return to lockdowns, even as the number of coronavirus cases in the country spikes largely because of the highly infectious delta variant.
"I don't think we're going to see lockdowns. I think we have enough of the percentage of people in the country, not enough to crush the outbreak, but I believe enough to not allow us to get into the situation we were in last winter," Fauci told host Jon Karl on ABC's "This Week."
He did, however, say "things are going to get worse," before contending that the country is "seeing an outbreak of the unvaccinated."
"If you look at the acceleration of the number of cases, the seven-day average has gone up substantially. You know, what we really need to do, Jon, we say it over and over again, and it's the truth, we have 100 million people in this country who are eligible to be vaccinated who are not getting vaccinated. We are seeing an outbreak of the unvaccinated," he said.

(100,029 posts)Is that the reason why there are so many anti-vaxxers out there is because of disinformation and propaganda that's being passed around and weaponized on Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg is really doing a disservice to humanity by not only allowing this shit to continue, but the fact that he's making billions off of it is even more infuriating. I'd go so far as to consider it borderline terrorism. And any blood that happens in the next few weeks because of anti-vaxxer propaganda is entirely on them.

(33,232 posts)There are 2 groups:
1. Refusers: conservative rustics, fundies, anti-vaxxers, and conspiracy theorists.
2. Hesitants: the lazy, the phobic, the untrusting.

Group 2 is reachable. All you need to do is pay them.
BTW, the NYT article on FB's private group misinformation dilemma is worth a read.

(53,733 posts)as the vaccination rate has started to go up because of all the news about people being hospitalized and/or dying because of the delta variant.
I hope the rate increases more and more before the virus mutates again into something even worse than the delta variant.

(17,382 posts)...because the only people who follow it are the people who are vaccinated and wearing masks in any event, Republicans Governors in the States that are hardest hit will refuse to enforce it, and the unvaccinated folks who most need to be vaccinated and wear masks will double down in fighting against what Fox News/OANN/Newsmax will call tyranny while the while claim that it is all a hoax.
The better approach is to issue the guidance, be consistent, tell the truth, and hope folks slowly come to their senses, and it seems that some are doing as the pace of vaccination has increased.

given when each person was fully vaxxed. I've been advocating for this for some time now.

(27,995 posts)Lockdown sounds like house arrest. I don't think anyone in the US was ever "locked down". Our restaurants, gyms and many stores were closed for a time, but we could still go on drives, go for walks, hikes, etc.

like the WHO, and just about every other organization that is following this pandemic.
China has an authoritarian government - what they decree - happens.
I believe the stats.
The Chinese attack every outbreak quickly and efficiently.
We complain about restrictions to be "free".
We ignore unenforced guidelines . . .
We lose.

The press freedom index was used as an indicator to measure the level of freedom to journalists in the country. China ranked on 177th place among 180 surveyed countries.

(8,037 posts)Dr. Fauci and others should refrain from making predictions.
I read today another variant has spread in Latin America, and there are concerns that this one may be more resistant to vaccines than Delta.
A daily situation report would be better--just the facts, without speculation or possibly unwise predictions.

(792 posts)Dr. Fauci, when you're operating in unknown circumstances, it's ok to not have an answer, and it's ok to say you don't have an answer. In fact, it's infinitely preferable to pretending you have the answers.
Just give us the info you have and leave it at that. Every time you flip or speak off the cuff you destroy a bit of credibility for the organization that you're paid very handsomely to represent. That diminished credibility leads to people not following the well-informed guidance that you do eventually issue.

(7,153 posts)And that modified behavior will blunt this spike.
If NOT...
The latest CDC weekly report (30 Jul) said the 7-day average of new daily cases rose from 40597 the week before to 66606, a 64.1% increase.
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/covidview/index.html
IF the percentage rate of weekly increase remains the same, that would yield 2.69 times the current average in 2 weeks, 7.25 times the current average in four weeks, etc. This could lead to more restrictions, more virtual school starting at or shortly after area schools begin in late August, etc.
I hope that the current spike will subside as more people get vaccinated, modify their behavior from 2019-style 4th of July behavior, etc., BUT I'm fearful that many won't change (until their noses get rubbed in it).

(2,379 posts)make them ashamed to go maskless and not get vaccinated. Then, like NYC, no vaccination, no mask ?--- no restaurants, no concerts, no bars, no indoor sports, etc...anything not indispensable.
