Judge rebukes Jan. 6 defendant, sentences him to time served

Source: AP

By ALANNA DURKIN RICHER

A federal judge on Wednesday assailed the false claims of election fraud pushed by former President Donald Trump and his supporters as she sentenced a member of the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 to time served, saying the Michigan man “placed his trust in someone who repaid that trust by lying to him.”

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson told Karl Dresch, a Calumet resident in the Upper Peninsula, that he was an “enthusiastic participant” in an effort to subvert the will of the voters. But the judge said a deal with prosecutors allowing him to plead guilty to a misdemeanor was appropriate because his “actions didn’t match his rhetoric” and he didn’t hurt anyone or destroy anything at the Capitol.

Dresch, who has been locked up since his arrest in January, is being released from jail since he already served the six-month maximum sentence for the misdemeanor offense. His attorney, Jerry Ray Smith Jr., said, “I’m going to be happy to send him home” and declined additional comment.

Later Wednesday, two other Jan. 6 defendants — a Virginia couple who likewise pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges — were also sentenced, and avoided jail time. Jessica Bustle was ordered to serve two months in home confinement and her husband Joshua Bustle received one month home confinement. They will each serve two years of probation.

just standing there strumming an electric guitar all by themselves, singing a song they wrote. Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Chris Cornell, and Jason Isbell definitely jump to mind ... but Phoebe is also up there.

This song gets to me pretty hard ...

If these seditionist sacks of shit can plea deal, and save the tax payer “rent”...that at the very least, they have a felony on their record...preventing these treasonous son-of-bitches from EVER owning a gun again!

Stephen Paul Dresch

Unusual obituary for his father:

Obituary for Stephen Paul Dresch
Stephen Dresch passed away Sunday, August 6 at his home in Hancock, MI. He was born in East St. Louis, Illinois in 1943, the first son of Rev. Lester and Mrs. Lenore Dresch. Stephen's courage to stand up for what he believed led him in many directions over his lifetime.

Stephen graduated from High School at the age of 16. At 19, he married Linda Ness and graduated from Miami University in Ohio. He later received his PhD in economics from Yale University.

Early in his career, Stephen worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Ford Foundation in New York City and held teaching positions at Yale, Rutgers, and Southern Connecticut State College (now University). He established the Institute for Demographic and Economic Studies in New Haven, CT. He was an economic advisor to several presidents, and even in his mid-20s, he was unafraid to openly dispute in testimony politically expedient proclamations by presidential cabinet members and others to stand up for accuracy and responsibility to the public’s best interest.

By the mid-70’s, Stephen recognized the failing state of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In 1983, he went to the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna, Austria to work with other scholars debating, planning and promoting the free market future of the East.

In 1985, Stephen arrived in the Keweenaw to serve as dean and professor in the School of Business and Engineering Administration at MTU. His uncovering of malfeasance within the university spurred a pivotal shift in his career focus. Striving towards truth, justice and integrity, he exposed corruption in government and related private enterprises. He was passionate about protecting the rights and liberties of the common, unconnected individual.

Wikipedia:

Stephen Dresch

Stephen Paul Dresch was a scholar and professor and a one-term Republican member of the Michigan House of Representatives, serving the western end of the Upper Peninsula in the early 1990s.[1

. . .

Background
Dresch was born in East St. Louis, Illinois in 1943, the first son of Rev. Lester and Lenore Dresch. He graduated from high school at the age of 16. At 19, he married Linda Ness and graduated from Miami University in Ohio. He later earned a Ph.D. in economics at Yale University.

He was a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research from 1969 through 1977, and the director of research in economics of higher education at Yale University from 1972 through 1975. Dresch founded the Institute for Demographic and Economic Studies in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1975, and joined the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna, Austria, which advocated the adoption of free market economics in Eastern Europe, in 1983. Dresch became the dean of business and engineering administration at Michigan Tech from 1985 until his election in 1990, also serving as a visiting scholar at the institute of Economics and Forecasting of Scientific and Technological Progress of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1988.[3]

In the legislature
Following Dresch' role in exposing internal corruption at Michigan Tech, he chose to run in 1990 for the 110th District of the Michigan House of Representatives (Keweenaw, Houghton, Ontonagon, Gogebic and Iron counties). He was not supported by legislative leadership, who allegedly vowed, "No Dresch bill will leave this House." He was nonetheless elected Assistant Minority Whip by his fellow Republicans. He served on the standing committees on civil rights, constitution and women's issues, marine affairs and port development, social services and youth, and transportation.[4] The 110th District was slightly modified in 1992 by the addition of Baraga County. Dresch was not re-elected (he ran instead for the Republican nomination for Congress from his district, losing to Philip Ruppe in the primary), and was succeeded by Democrat Stephen Shepich. When Shepich resigned in January of 1994 (as part of a plea bargain following the House Fiscal Agency scandal), Dresch ran for his old seat in a special election on April 6, 1994, but lost to Democrat Paul Tesanovich. (He lost by 39 votes, and some of his supporters claimed fraud in Gogebic County; but no recount was requested.)[5]

. . .

In August 2021, Dresch' son Karl pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for his participation in the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dismissed four other counts. He was sentenced to time served after spending six months in prison awaiting trial.

He gets four charges dropped and time served.

Crystal Mason is still in jail five years later for an obscure Texas law that convicted her of illegal voting. Which she didn't do.

This guy tried to wipe out the votes of millions. He gets off with a misdemeanor and time served. He'll get to attack at the next insurrection while Chrystal is still pleading her case. Which she won't win in Texas.

Guess which one is white and which one is black.

I know Jackson supposed to be great, but this is wrong. Sounds like a trumper DA making all the light charges and plea deals.

if not directly involved with the violence, they were part of the cover that allowed the violence. 6 months is not enough. People died, over 150 cops were injured, 4 cops to date have committed suicide, people were terrified, hell people are still going to work in fear. 6 Months is not enough

We're going to be seeing a lot of this in upcoming weeks as more sentences drop. If the prosecution makes a deal with the defendant, the judge does not have discretion to set it aside. To do so would defeat the whole purpose of plea bargaining. It has zero to do with the judge's "judgement."
