New Orleans Jazz Fest Canceled for Second Year in a Row as COVID-19 Cases Surge

Source: People

The 2021 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has been canceled. Festival organizers announced Sunday that the annual event, which typically takes place in late April and early May, has been canceled after being delayed to October, as coronavirus cases surge in the Big Easy.

"As a result of the current exponential growth of new COVID cases in the New Orleans and the region and the ongoing public health emergency, we must sadly announce that the 2021 edition of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell, scheduled to take place October 8 -17, 2021, will not occur as planned," festival organizers said in a statement.

The festival was set to feature stars like The Rolling Stones, Lizzo, Demi Lovato, Stevie Nicks, H.E.R., Ludacris, Foo Fighters, Dead & Company, and more. Jazz Fest was also canceled last due to the ongoing outbreak, with 2020 ticket holders promised at the time they could roll over vouchers to 2021. Now, organizers said that ticket holders can expect an email with more information on refunds and rollovers in hopes of the event returning next year.

Meanwhile, all tickets for Oct. 13 will be refunded automatically."In the meantime, we urge everyone to follow guidelines and protocols put forth by public health officials, so that we can all soon experience together the joy that is Jazz Fest," Jazz Fest officials said. Next year's festival is scheduled for its traditional timeframe, starting April 29 to May 8, 2022.

The Tweet announcement -

Just heard this on the local news radio station here. I figured that. And this was due to happen in October, although we know that unfortunately, LA has some of the highest COVID infection rates in the country. I don't know what they are going to do here with the "Made in America" festival due for Labor Day weekend.

I'll bet if Louisiana had a Republican governor, they'd try to have the fest.

Go! Go to the festival and catch Covid!!

but use the popular names as headliners to draw in traveling tourists for the big main stages and charge premium prices. Dollar dollar bill yall.

New Orleans has good jazz year round in various local bars and music halls.

Just talked to my neighbor, a local pianist and he said that the clubs he plays are full. I asked if locals or tourists and he shrugged. He's a smart and talented guy but an anti-vaxxer and I expect he will get Covid although I'm sure he has to mask on public transportation such as the ferry and in the clubs. I'm waiting for a booster and never go anywhere without being fully masked. If the vax is a hoax so what? If Covid is a hoax so what? Someone is going through an awful lot of trouble to create facts and figures and fill up hospitals if that is so.

Like my sister in CA said yesterday, it is kind of easy to ignore the disaster if you follow the rules and don't know anyone who has died. Neither of us is much of a rule follower, but in this case self-preservation took over and we vaxxed as soon as possible.

Jefferson Parish, right next door to me on the West Bank has the biggest increase and the highest number of cases with Orleans (my parish) just behind. We have always had great hospitals but the gun and gang violence continues and with the Covidiots out there I'm not sure just how long before they have to go into a Katrina triage type situation with sick and injured residents.

And it is August and there is a tropical wave out there. August and September have statistically the highest incidence of hurricanes. What a SNAFU in the original sense of the acronym.

Rain today and that always makes me happy so here's hoping we can Fest in the spring.

especially in a hotspot like Louisiana. Many of their hospitals hit capacity already or will run out of specialized equipment, like ventilators for small children, very soon.

I'd already made up my mind not to go this year, because of COVID. I guess I hoped things would return to normal, but I'm glad they canceled it.

People WOULD DIE because of it, and if even one person lost their life it wouldn't be worth it.
Hopefully next year? I'm getting toward the end of my days though, and I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever see "normal" again

I just hope there's a democracy, a semi-normal life to live, and an inhabitable planet for my grandchildren.

Left to republicans, that seems doubtful, so we can't leave it to republicans.

I think it seems quite doubtful given human nature.

I guess we lived in the golden age of human life, and we didn't even know it.

And most humans will take the easy way out 99% of the time.

I try not to think about that too much. I'm glad I'm much closer to the end of my life than the beginning.

Poll after poll tells us most people the world over want a peaceful, fair, healthy, safe world, to live in peace and raise their children. Free from violence, and have food, shelter, clothing, etc.

But mankind also contains a group of sociopaths, who value power and wealth above all else. And these people have a very violent streak, and lead the populace to disaster after disaster.

Even when we get good, decent leadership, they can only do so much up against the violent cabal that is really in charge.

Yes I am glad that I am closer to end of life than the beginning. The next generations are going to be faced with serious challenges.

called "Snakes in Suits"

Apparently, there is some discussion if there is any real difference between psychopaths and sociopaths.

I do know that sociopaths are highly charming, intelligent etc., but devoid of emotion - very talented in deceit to get what they want . . .

I have read in numerous articles, that 1 in 4 of every US citizen has some sociopathic tendencies, but it's a small percentage that "rise to the top".

BUT - those are the people that rule us.

And in terms of diagnoses, the DSM (psychiatric diagnostic manual) does not use the term psychopath. (But it did mention it in passing in the latest version.) I think in common usage psychopath refers to a more heinous version of sociopathy.

The term mental health professionals use is Antisocial Personalty Disorder. The occurrence of full blown disorder is not high, about 4% of the population. But yes, more people will have some tendencies.

We can see that there is a disproportionate number of sociopaths in leadership positions. I never forgot a quote I read in graduate school: "The best sociopaths don't break the law, they make the law."
