Texas senator ends 15-hour filibuster, voting bill passes

Source: Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas state senator ended a 15-hour filibuster Thursday morning in the Democrats’ latest defiance over a sweeping GOP voting measure, which then passed just minutes after she wearily left the floor.

Democrat Carol Alvarado began speaking shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday even though she acknowledged that the filibuster would not block the legislation. She was required to remain standing and speaking, was prohibited from taking bathroom breaks and wore running shoes on the Senate floor, just as former Texas legislator Wendy Davis did in 2013 when she filibustered a sweeping anti-abortion bill.

“What’s wrong with drive-thru voting during a pandemic? What’s wrong with 24-hour voting? Why can’t we have expanded voting hours for the people who have to work late? Where is all the so-called fraud?” Alvarado said in the closing moments of her filibuster. “Where does it end?

She hugged her Democratic colleagues after finally putting down the microphone. Minutes later, the bill passed 18-11 in the Senate, although the measure is now once again stalled since Democrats continue to stay away from the state House of Representatives in a standoff that has now entered a 32nd day.

Because of their efforts, history will record who were the villains and who were the heroes.

I hope that, one day soon, the Republicans will get what they deserve for the unapologetic, open attempt to squash Democracy. In the next few years, we will determine if we are worthy of good government or not. History teaches that we also will get what we deserve.

History also teaches that there are those who have gotten what they didn't deserve, but I get what you mean.

Wants no part of the democracy in this country, then THIS country has zero obligation to send Vents and Medical professionals there to save their asses from a rampaging virus, one they welcome. Why would doctors and Nurses go risk their lives in that infestation while the “ASS” THEY elected over Pete, is pushing legislation to block masks, vaccines and distancing mandates? FreeDumb to die, but not kill others, especially people trying to dave their useless lives. Sorry for the DEM folks that live there, and you may be majority being silenced by corrupt Texas Voting scams, need to be taken down. By you. Just look at the idiots voted into power. THEY DO NOT GIVE A FUCK about you. Only Fossil Fuel multimillionaires thick in Texas are what and why they are in power. And we are suppose to bail you out from hurricanes, fires, floods and everything those assholes create. “Our” taxes b/c those criminals pay no taxes. Actually get billions in subsidies, from us. If you support Ted Cruz Freedumb legislation to allow virus unchecked, do not ask out of state help. What a shit hole country going on there. Where are the people in the streets demanding to end this voting scam and showing support for those Dems fighting for you, only to be arrested?

They're merely hiring temporary staff. "THIS country" hasn't been asked to take on any obligation.

That Texas AND Florida, and just heard Thom Hartmann state, that Abbott IS begging for Federal stock ventilators and Doctors/nurses to come to Texas and help. And Biden is sending medical emergency teams to help. I do not begrudge help for those that are fighting the GQP stance, but when Abbott is actively stopping protective measures and at the same time requesting out of state people to come there and expose themselves to the stupid, it enraging me. And just look at Ted Cruzes newest grandstanding bill to outlaw anything mandated, while his kids are in private school, $30,000 per year, that MANDATES what he does not want private schools to do.
