WASHINGTON The Supreme Court refused on Thursday to block Indiana University's requirement that students receive a Covid vaccine to attend classes in the fall semester.
It was the first legal test of a Covid vaccine mandate to come before the justices. A challenge to the policy was directed to Amy Coney Barrett, the justice in charge of that region of the country, who denied it. There were no noted dissents from other justices.
Eight Indiana students asked the court for an emergency order, arguing that the risks associated with the vaccine outweighed the potential benefits to the population in their age group. "Protection of others does not relieve our society from the central canon of medical ethics requiring voluntary and informed consent," they told the justices, seeking an emergency order to block the vaccine requirement.
A federal judge ruled last month that the school had a right to pursue "a reasonable and due process of vaccination in the legitimate interest of public health for its students, faculty, and staff." The students have many options, the judge said, such as applying for an exemption, taking the semester off, viewing classes online, or attending another university..............................

(7,284 posts)There were some flare ups, but they required random testing (my daughter tested an average of once every two weeks), and they had a quarantine dorm.
The main problem was that they could not control parties at off-campus frat houses.

(14,061 posts)Did IU have a hybrid system, or did they go all remote? My kid (at IUPUI) came home in the middle of the semester and finished online. But IUPUI is a mix of commuter and on-campus students.

(7,284 posts)My daughter signed up for all remote classes for the Spring. It was challenging, but she did well.
We'll see how this year goes!

I mean there are millions dead worldwide from COVID, but what a few dozen from the vaccine itself? No one could even say with any degree of certainty that the vaccine causes specific health problems down the road.
Yes, agree with OP, HUGE. This vaccine is a no-brainer beyond MMR, DPT. No one can say I'm better off without it, or I'm immune. They're all breeding grounds is what they are.

(16,359 posts)You know, the vaccines do all kinds of awful things to you. They make you sterile, make metal stick to you, allow Bill Gates to track you (although why he would want to is a mystery to me and I've yet to hear any of those chuckleheads give a reason).
There really aren't any real risks (credible , significant ones, anyway), so they have to make all kinds of stuff up.

Antivaxers are just going to have to find another stupid cause.

Agreed the Court had better things to do than deal with this nonsense. Frivolous lawsuit.

Ok, I will credit SCOTUS for not being TOTALLY insane-- for now.

(128,814 posts)The fact that they were given alternatives that included "applying for an exemption" and "viewing online", pretty much sealed it.
Glad to see this. We will see many more schools doing this because last year, they were the hotbeds of most of the super-spreader events.
