ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Two St. Louis City sheriff deputies were fired after working security for Congresswoman Cori Bush. Now, one of them is defending himself, saying his firing was unfair.
Bush was on CBS last week defending her use of private security, saying "I'm gonna make sure I have security because I know I have had attempts on my life and I have too much work to do."
Recent federal filings show she's spent $70,000 in campaign funds since taking office for private security services. Back in April, Bush, St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones and other notables took a tour of the city's jails. News 4 obtained surveillance video from the tours and along with all others, two security guards were there to protect Bush: Tylance Jackson and Maurice Thompson.
Also there that day was St. Louis Sheriff Vernon Betts who told News 4 he was surprised to see the two security guards because they also worked for him. The sheriff told News 4 Jackson and Thompson violated policy by not getting approval to work a secondary shift as security guards. He said the two were warned not to do it again but several weeks later, he said his office was called by the VA police in Jefferson Barracks who said the two men were again providing security for Bush.

(7,408 posts)I would have fired them also, blatant insubordination. Makes you wonder what other rules or laws they may have been breaking?

(13,918 posts)Ive learned to never believe LE, especially their spokespersons and leaders, are ever telling the whole truth about a situation. Often enough their version of events is at right angles with reality.
And thats before getting to enforcement and regular practice. If there's a rule about doing what they did, and they violated it, but 25%, to make up a number, of the other officers are violating it any given evening, just with lower profile clients, and with no punishment administered in other cases, then this is again, not fair treatment.
Even if regular practice, it is less than ideal to break rules that one has been informed of. But I have to wonder if they were working security at a popular nightclub and the sheriff rolled up with his mistress and saw them, or if they were working security for Roy Blunt and the sheriff was there as a guest speaker at some event and he saw them.. if they would have been initially reprimanded, let alone fired.

(13,918 posts)I trust police officials to tell the whole or accurate truth about as far as I can throw an aircraft carrier.

(67,782 posts)...permission to work security jobs. The Department needs to know who and where they are.
One reason is, let's say there's an incident in a bar where one might be working, they don't want fellow officers busting in and wind up with friendly fire shootings.
Where I live now, officers are encouraged to work street/road construction jobs. They do it in full uniform and actually use town cruisers.

(67,782 posts)...want to work off-duty somewhere else, they have to at least notify their superiors if not get their permission.

(397 posts)I wonder how VA police could know these two sheriffs officers well enough to know who they were and then contact the sheriffs dept about their off duty work status?
Obviously the story doesn't say.
But I've seen police officers in uniform who appeared to be working private security gigs.
I don't know what their department policies were but it wouldn't have been something I'd okay if I were in charge of anything.

(160,501 posts)and that will take a while. They have revealed themselves in ways that leave no doubt about their natures.
Democrats certainly deserve protection from this filth. Period.

(33,643 posts)Right after you talk about having your own private security ... who it turns out, apparently ... are cops.
Now her security is in trouble at their regular cop jobs.
I don't even know where to start, honestly

(1,000 posts)like Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, Boogaloo Boys, Three Percenters, and Klan. Florida has a serious Klan problem from what I have read. I'd worry about that more than moonlighting with private security.
