Taliban holds press conference from Afghanistan, claims women allowed to study 'within our framework
Source: USA Today
WASHINGTON U.S. military evacuation flights resumed from Afghanistan Tuesday as the Taliban sought to allay fears in their first press conference since taking power by declaring "amnesty" for government officials and vowing to uphold women's rights under Islamic law.
Many feared the Taliban's return to power, governed by strict Islamic law, but in their first news conference since seizing control of Afghanistan, officials sought to calm an unsettled country by reiterating calls for "amnesty" for those who worked for the fallen government.
Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban, said they were working to form a government and vowed that "nobody will be harmed."
Their aim, he said, is to make sure "Afghanistan is no longer a battlefield of conflict."

(15,669 posts)Another awesome part is the 300,000 who worked with the United States and NATO are receiving amnesty. Maybe this will workout after all. We have 2,000 that worked with us that just landed in Virginia. We need to find them housing, money, doctors, etc. Maybe that will be who we end up with.

(5,585 posts)Once the US military leaves the airport, who's going to fly a plane in to Kabul? The place is essentially a lawless territory right now. Nobody knows who exactly is in charge, everyone is heavily armed, and the plane you have is worth $100m. There's not an insurance company in the world that would allow you to do that.
And for the people that want to leave, are you just going to put on your exit visa request that you want to go to America or the UK because you helped the US Marines in translation duties?
The time to get those people out of Afghanistan was in the 7 month lead up after Biden was sworn in. Now they're stuck there with no way to get out, and they can only hope that the US State Department was actually able to destroy all their identifying paperwork. Paperwork that identifies them as 'collaborators' but without which they might not be able to prove their service and get into the US.

of the Bible installed. Some are in Congress.
Because secular law gives them freedom of religion, there are communities all over. Some are quite rigorous in their requirements for female dress and education. Some are Christian, some are Jewish, and have no interest in assimilation. The Ultra-Orthodox Jews mostly want to be left alone, but the Evangelical Christians want you to convert, and the whack-jobs want to install a version of Gilead.
This is not a vote of approval, by the way. Women like me get stoned to death. Its just a comment that in all three Abrahamic religions there are extremists at the fringes, and they have a lot in common.

(12,563 posts)Anytime they say that women will be treated fairly is a lie. Their religion subjugates women to the status of chattel. Expect rapes, forced marriages to 15-year-olds, and executions of women in highly responsible positions.
It's the Republicans' wet dream.

(107,710 posts)In some parts of Afghanistan, including Kabul, a generation of girls grew up in a world completely different from the one their parents knew.
The Talibans return to the city and consolidation of power this week appeared to bring those nearly two decades of change, including hard-won rights for women, crashing down.
Friba, who fled from Kunduz, a northern provincial capital, to Kabul this month in the face of the Talibans rapid advance, only to find herself living under the Taliban anyway, described the whiplash that many women who built lives in a new Afghanistan now face. You are outside working with the community, with girls, with women but suddenly, you go in a prison and you cant do anything for anyone, she told The Washington Post. Now every Afghan woman [is] in prison in their room. They cannot go outside. They cannot be like before.
The Taliban, wary of once again governing as an international pariah, has tried to strike a more conciliatory tone this time around. We assure the international community that there will be no discrimination against women, but, of course, within the frameworks we have, spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said at a news conference in Kabul on Tuesday.
