Taliban spokesperson says China could contribute to Afghanistan's development
Source: The Hill
A Taliban spokesperson told Chinese state media Thursday that China could play a role in the future of Afghanistan.
In an interview with China's state CGTN television, Taliban spokesperson Suhail Shaheen said China would be able to contribute to Afghanistan's development after the Taliban takeover, Thomas Reuters Foundation News reported.
China has signaled to the Taliban that it is ready to work with their new government, despite other countries' hesitancy towards the group.
"The Taliban have repeatedly expressed their hope to develop good relations with China, and that they look forward to China's participation in the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan," China's foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said a day after the Taliban took control of Kabul.

(12,516 posts)China already controls much of the rare earth mineral supply. Needed for the mfg. of many of the greenhouse gas reduction products we want. Now we're giving them even MORE control over us. I've preached it for years but nobody seems to give a shit. Look up an article in the NYT; "The World; by China". It shows in detail how china continues to expand their reach into controlling more & more supplies in the world. And Afghanistan has a large supply of these minerals
And we become weaker the bigger that reach gets.

(2,783 posts)that it was more about rare earth minerals than oil. Now I find articles detailing there are several trillion dollars worth of rare earth minerals in Afghanistan. Yippers... China will have a monopoly market on them. But I doubt China is gonna like dealing with the Taliban any better than we, or anyone else, did.

(9,959 posts)Nothing. Instead, we tried to destroy some poppy crops without giving farmers alternatives means of earning a living. The Taliban exploited the illegal drug market, now worth an estimated $2 billion per year. I know it isnt the militarys job to create economic opportunity, but self interest says we would have been better off doing exactly that. And some of those rare earths are very rare indeed, and China already has a monopoly on them. That was short sighted of US leaders.

We MUST insist that companies move mfg OUT of China. It may not be feasible to move it back here, but there are PLENTY of countries who are not a threat to us who would LOVE the business. And if the govt has to step in to make it happen, so be it. While we sleep, they grow stronger. On our money as well as the EU.
