Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and one of the Senate's most outspoken war hawks, said in a Wall Street Journal op-ed on Friday that the US military should extend its withdrawal deadline in Afghanistan and risk being attacked by the Taliban.

Graham, who's long supported indefinite American occupations abroad, and his op-ed coauthor, retired Gen. Jack Keane, said the US government must not fully withdraw until thousands of Afghan allies are evacuated. They urged President Joe Biden to keep US troops in Afghanistan past his August 31 withdrawal deadline and create pathways for Afghan allies to travel from across the country to the Kabul airport for evacuation.

"President Biden must keep forces in place long enough to evacuate those to whom we owe a great debt," they wrote. "He must be willing to accept the risk that the Taliban will attack our forces."

They argued it would be "dishonorable" to apply "anything less" than the "full force" of the US military to the effort.

We would then be in Afghanistan in perpetuity as Afghan stragglers who have no business being evacuated demand the U.S. fly them out. It would never end. U.S. should absolutely not be in harms way even now to get anyone else out other than U.S. citizens.

I'm focused on getting these 10k or so Americans (whom DID NOT heed state dept. warning to evacuate a full week before Kabul collapse) out. Then it's wheels up. By that time we'll have gotten plenty of Afghans out. If they the want to feel betrayed they can look at their former armed forces who surrendered instead of fight.

Aug 31 doesn't apply if all US citizens are not gone by then. It was said that almost 9,000 people per DAY were being evacuated. There are going to be a lot of Afghan refugees leaving.

Kabul is closed, and we have no means to extract anyone without a military major fight, and our priority is to finish the evacuation flights. Lindsey is talking out his ass about stuff he doesn't understand. I think the situation on the ground is fluid and urgent. I'm sick of Lindsey substituting his personal opinion in as an operational viable pathway. He doesn't know squat. Since he and his bud, the Orange Turd, obstructed the transition for Biden, he can keep his mouth shut while Joe straightens things out.
