Tropical Storm Henri barrels toward U.S. East Coast
Source: Reuters
Tropical Storm Henri as it threatened to bring fierce winds and heavy rains that could cause dangerous storm surge and flooding across the region, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.
As of Saturday morning, the storm was gathering strength packing 70 mph (113 kph) winds while it meandered north about 200 miles east of North Carolina. On its current track, Henri was expected to make landfall, possibly as a hurricane, in Long Island, New York or southern New England on Sunday, the center said in an advisory.
Parts of Long Island, New York and New Haven, Connecticut were under hurricane and storm surge warnings on Saturday. Other parts of New England, such as Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, were under surge and tropical storm watches and warnings.
"This is a life-threatening situation. Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other dangerous conditions," the NHC said.

(128,441 posts)The problem with it is that it is juicy with moisture so there will be spots that get a lot of rain (even including where I am in Philly) and where it is headed, those areas could get a lot of storm surge - especially since it is also a full moon this weekend.

And the remnants of Fred coming past here mid week from the west (I got 3.5" in an hour from it) ended up being bad too because that spun up a bunch of tornadoes in the area, leading to more power outages.

(7,367 posts)And Henri is arriving during a full moon, as did Sandy.
Cat 1 or even a tropical storm could bring gusts up to 90mph and higher. Certainly enough to bring down branches, trees, power lines and cause significant flooding.

(16,199 posts)Tropical Storm Isaias (2 million outages) last year and Tropical Storm Irene (4.2 million outages) in 2011.
Sure, Sandy in 2012 knocked out the lights too, but only as long as the previous Oct 29, 2011, when a freak heavy snowstorm brought down half of Connecticut. That was the same year as Irene, so the Electric Company heads were the most hated men in the region.

Aug 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. East Coast braced on Saturday for the arrival of Hurricane Henri as it threatened to bring fierce winds and heavy rains that could cause dangerous storm surge and flooding across the region, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.
As of Saturday morning, the storm was gathering strength packing 75 mph (120 kph) winds while it meandered north about 180 miles east of North Carolina. On its current track, Henri was expected to make landfall in Long Island, New York or southern New England on Sunday, the center said in an advisory.
Parts of Long Island, New York, and New Haven, Connecticut, were under hurricane and storm surge warnings on Saturday. Other parts of New England, such as Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, were under surge and tropical storm watches and warnings."This is a life-threatening situation. Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other dangerous conditions," the NHC said.
The center warned Henri could produce storm surges of 3 to 5 feet along the coast in New England, 70 mph or high wind gusts and rains of 3 to 6 inches with 10 inches in isolated areas. If Henri strikes southeast New England as a hurricane, it will be the first direct hurricane landfall since Bob almost to the date in 1991.
