The Taliban issued a death sentence to the brother of an Afghan interpreter who helped the US

despite saying it won't seek revenge
The Taliban accused the brother of an Afghan interpreter of aiding Americans and sentenced him to death, according to letters obtained by CNN, after previously claiming that it would not seek revenge against people who helped the US military.
In the first of three letters, the man was accused of "helping the Americans" and providing security for his brother, who was an interpreter, and was ordered to appear for a hearing. The second letter informed him that his case had been sent to the Sharia court because he didn't appear.
In the third letter, the Taliban notified the man that he had been found "guilty in absentia" after not appearing for the Sharia court hearing. The letter said the man was sentenced to death, and that he could not object to the sentence.
"You chose this path for yourself and your death is imminent, God willing," the letter read, as quoted by CNN.

There will be some reprisals, there always are after a war of occupation, but this is just a little soon and I don't think the Taliban are quite that stupid, They certainly wouldn't announce it, nor would they allow a legitimate letter to get out later, when we're gone and reprisals do start up.
I'm not saying it's beyond the realm of faint possibility, I'm saying this is fishy as hell. Somebody's got an agenda.

(111,245 posts)Sorry, but this stinks to high heaven.
Either it's an attempt to push the US into getting people out faster (and there are only so many landings and takeoffs that airport can handle) or it's some hawk who doesn't want the gravy train to end and wants us to stay.
Rogue Taliban fighters aren't going to bother with courts, they're going to show up at 3 AM and murder everybody in the house. It's going to be a tall order to control them. It's also going to be a tall order to keep services going, like power in the areas that have it and fuel deliveries to the areas that don't.
Either the country will fall apart into a series of warlord enclaves or the Taliban will manage to pull this off. We'll just have to wait on the sidelines while the propaganda war goes on.
See my post below.
This sounds silly.

(16,844 posts)Would a sharia court or any court in that area use that phrase? We use it all the time in America, but it comes from Latin. Would people who speak Pashto or Persian use a Latin phrase? If that's not a literal quote from the letter, then why is it in quotes?

(6,477 posts)The supposed letters are a mish mash of cliches and nonsense. The translations are also hilarious: it actually says "Your death is eminent."
Here's what's going on: the terp is trying to get his brother out of Afghanistan, but his brother doesn't really have good cause. So, they've concocted this clownish series of letters that plays on every American trope. CNN runs it with pretty much no verification (a former service member confirmed the terp's service, good, hooray - they got an old buddy in on the act). It circulates because it confirms the worst fears of the Americans, which is precisely how Afghans have been manipulating Americans for 20 years.
Ultimately, I think they should give the brother a chance to get out, fine.
But how dumb does one have to be to believe this series of letters?

(1,568 posts)Not because I think the Taliban has turned a new leaf. In fact, I am sure they havent and its going to suck for a lot of Afghans. Its just that the letter itself seems off. The fact that these letters even exist doesnt seem like a real thing. Obviously I could be wrong, but I wont be surprised if they turn out to be fake
