Pace drops but US evacuates another 13,400 from Afghanistan

Roughly 13,400 people were evacuated from Afghanistan between early Wednesday morning and early Thursday morning, the White House said, a steep drop from a day earlier as the U.S. begins to wind down its mission there.
Of the 13,400 evacuees, more than 5,000 were evacuated on 17 U.S. military flights out of Kabul. Another 8,300 people were evacuated on civilian aircraft, the White House said.
Biden administration officials said the U.S. has evacuated more than 95,000 people from Afghanistan since Aug. 14, when the capital city of Kabul fell to the Taliban. The U.S. has relocated more than 100,000 people from Afghanistan since the end of July.

But Thursday's evacuation total of 13,400 marked a sharp drop from the 19,000 people who were evacuated in the previous 24 hours. The dip comes as President Biden has said the U.S. will aim to have all troops out of Afghanistan by Aug. 31, despite calls from lawmakers in both parties to extend that deadline to get all Americans and Afghan allies out of the country.

(4,167 posts)I bet the drop is due to not as many people needing to get out as before seems to me like the supply is still there, but less demand you cant evacuate people who arent there to be evacuated.

(2,560 posts)Not that surprised with The Hill, but NYT, CNN, etc. are doing the same thing, while the TV station with the biggest "news" ratings since 8/14 is Fox.

(45,380 posts)the pace dropped because there are fewer people left to evacuate. They've been airlifting thousands each day while media pretend "experts" spew faux outrage.
