New COVID variant detected in South Africa, most mutated variant so far
Source: Jerusalem Post
A new coronavirus variant, C.1.2, has been detected in South Africa and a number of other countries, with concerns that
it could be more infectious and evade vaccines, according to a new preprint study by South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform.
Scientists first detected C.1.2 in May 2021, finding that it was descended from C.1, which scientists found surprising as C.1 had last been detected in January. The new variant has "mutated substantially" compared to C.1 and is more mutations away from the original virus detected in Wuhan than any other Variant of Concern (VOC) or Variant of Interest (VOI) detected so far worldwide.
The study also found that the C.1.2 lineage has a mutation rate of about 41.8 mutations per year, which is nearly twice as fast as the current global mutation rate of the other variants.
While first detected in South Africa, C.1.2 has since been found in England, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland.

Many states in the U.S. are doing quite well in terms of vaccinations and mask-wearing, and many other countries are also doing quite well. But it only takes a pocket of mouth-breathing psychos who choose a misguided notion of freedom over disease prevention -- and all of the work and effort of others to secure the health and safety of their citizenry goes out the window.

(13,058 posts)alarm in this case, another variant will almost certainly come around. And the most frustrating thing about this is that we have the power to stop new variants from arising. If we could get the whole world vaccinated we could greatly reduce the chances of new variants. But we are very far from that goal.

(7,408 posts)Vaccinating 7 billion people and then boosters every 6 months, I don't know how that happens. Plus the virus is just as likely to mutate in a vaccinated person that gets infected as it is in an unvaccinated individual and like we are seeing with Delta, the breakthrough infection rate is much higher now for vaccinated folks.

(7,408 posts)Thats not misinformation or false.
Yes, the vaccines are still effective at preventing hospitalization and death, no one is arguing that. But they have become less effective at preventing infection with the Delta variant, because its more contagious due to its higher viral load and the effectiveness of the vaccines at preventing infection waning with time, thats been reported everywhere the last couple of weeks.
The more people getting infected, whether vaccinated or not, the more potential hosts the virus has to mutate.

(13,058 posts)So whom should I believe, reputable sources such as the ones I linked to, or you?
madville
(7,408 posts)They are now less effective at preventing infection with Delta. That's exactly why the CDC reversed guidance on vaccinated people wearing masks, because the vaccines are now less effective at preventing infection and spread (but still very effective at preventing hospitalization and death).
Your linked sources are based on outdated information, for instance the first one is from January, well before Delta emerged. While it may have been more factual in January, it's not taking the new characteristics of the Delta variant into account, so much of it is incorrect now. The science is constantly shifting as we all know.
My point was that with the vaccines now less likely to prevent infection in vaccinated people due to Delta's characteristics, more infections among the vaccinated mean more hosts and more potential for mutations. A virus can mutate any time it replicates, so more infections will naturally lead to more mutations regardless if the person is vaccinated or not.
There are plenty of current articles and data from the last month talking about the increased rate of infection in the vaccinated with the Delta variant.

(4 posts)Just wondering if this C.1.2 is a relative of the Lambda variant or robust mutant of Delta?
Really asking for all to be "Vaccinated!," wishful I see and it does bother me that these antivaxxers are making it even more dangerous for us all, but reality knocks on the door and says mutation's are inevitable in an aggressive virus like COVID 2.
Fauci's pattern to break really bleak news slowly and than BOO!
madville
(7,408 posts)per another article I read. With the breakthrough infections we are seeing in vaccinated folks with Delta, mutations will unfortunately continue to emerge regardless of people getting the current vaccine or not.

Most of the variants that have been given official designations thus far are of the Pango lineage.
