Manchin puts foot down on key climate provision in spending bill
Source: The Hill
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is throwing a wrench into Democratic plans for major government spending to tackle climate change.
In TV interviews over the weekend, the senator said he wouldn't back the party's $3.5 trillion spending proposal, adding that he doesn't support a program that would pay power providers to make the shift toward clean energy.
The so-called clean electricity payment program, a central component of the party's climate agenda, could be in jeopardy unless Democrats find a way to sell it to the key swing vote senator.
Manchin argued in a CNN interview that paying for a transition to clean energy isn't necessary since cleaner sources already make up a growing share of the country's electricity consumption.

... the Koch Brothers and is funded by the fossil fuel industry. And the F.F.I. is pulling out all stops in
trying to stop green energy and moving away from fossil fuels. i heard or read that the F.F.I. has a house
or office in D.C. dedicated to stopping this bill which addresses climate change. Manchin and Sinema are
looking @ millions of $s if they hold the line and stop the climate change bill.

(5,443 posts)probably one could get him to accept the rest of the bill, if the energy provisions that act against coal are not included.
It's not only the coal-mine owners but the workers and towns that depend on coal.

No, what we need is something that can provide alot of power in as an efficient way as possible but not put more carbon into the atmosphere but the problem is that with our current technology that means nuclear.
I would rather that we did not have to use nuclear of course but until something else can provide atleast the same amount of power its probably our only option for now though hopefully that can change sooner rather than later.

WATCH: The most emergent need that we have right now is to pass the bipartisan infrastructure bill, which will invest in roads, bridges, water, sewer & broadband after years of neglect. Any further spending should not be rushed & should be considered on a bipartisan basis.
That "bipartisan basis" language (to me) hints of a threat to kill reconciliation entirely.

I expect some form of the clean energy payment program to make it into the final bill.

(5,586 posts)His logic was that power companies are moving away from coal and towards cleaner / renewables anyway. Why should we (the American People) pay for something the companies are doing anyway with their own money?
I don't agree with all of his comments, but paying for stuff we don't need to pay for does make a certain kind of sense.

(2,800 posts)This sound reasonable except coal, gas and oil were and are subsidized still. they get direct cash subsidies and they get very big tax breaks. Therefore I argue we should subsidize the new round of clean technologies, even if they can compete without them as the others have and still enjoy breaks.

(218 posts)The Hill, that bastion of alternate facts. Notice how, to The Hill, Democrats are always in disarray, falling apart with no agenda or plan. They seem confused and have matters reversed.
They love them some Manchin, however, 'cause they can use him to bash Democrats. The spectacle of it all is Manchin's schtick. He's playing the Republican game of WWE wrestler, climbing on the ropes and pretending to jump into the spectators. It's all show and playacting for the campaign grift. As Schumer has said, Manchin will not give up the $$$ going to WV. It may take a little negotiating, but, it'll get done.
