Ex-U.S. intelligence operatives in UAE hacking case will cooperate with FBI to avoid prosecution

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Three former U.S. intelligence operatives, who worked as mercenary hackers for the United Arab Emirates, agreed to pay fines of $1.685 million and cooperate with federal prosecutors to avoid trial, the Justice Department said on Tuesday.

Defendants Marc Baier, Ryan Adams, and Daniel Gericke were part of a clandestine unit named Project Raven, first reported by Reuters, that helped the United Arab Emirates spy on its enemies.

The three entered into an agreement, known as a deferred prosecution agreement, with U.S. prosecutors who accused them of conspiring to violate hacking laws, the Justice Department said in court documents filed on Tuesday.

The three also agreed to give up foreign or U.S. security clearances and face future employment restrictions.

1. I am confused, on the surface it sounds like a description of three traitors who are given a free

ride for their cooperation.

Am I off on this?

What is going on? Why are traitors not being prosecuted as traitors? The USA is going nuts...

2. Climbing the food chain....

Using the smaller fish to catch the bigger fish, but the little fish aren't going to just roll over for nothing. You've got to deal.

3. The UAE Hired Former US Intelligence Personnel

Including former military and contractors, to work for a company that had ties to the UAE's intelligence services. They were working with other computer experts, including some from Russia and China. It was supposed to be just for external intelligence, like counter-terrorism. However, they soon realized that the Emiratis' version of counter-terrorism included foreign journalists, pro-democracy activists, etc. Some of the Americans reported this to the DOJ.
