Justice Kavanaugh tests positive for COVID, has no symptoms
Source: AP
WASHINGTON (AP) The Supreme Court says Justice Brett Kavanaugh has tested positive for COVID-19.
The high court said in a press release Friday that Kavanaugh has no symptoms and has been fully vaccinated since January. Kavanaugh and all the other justices had a routine coronavirus test ahead of Fridays ceremonial investiture for Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
The court says Kavanaughs wife and daughters are also fully vaccinated, and they tested negative on Thursday. The court says Kavanaugh and his wife will not attend the ceremony.
The courts new term begins on Monday and the justices are returning to the courtroom to hear arguments after an 18-month absence because of the coronavirus pandemic. They had been hearing arguments via telephone.

(8,311 posts)Since my state had done a phased-rollout of the vaccine, and pharmacies here are giving anybody a booster as long as it's been six months since their second shot, it does mean seniors and LTCF residents should be the first to get boosted under our system.
Still, the vaccine has helped reduce our "nursing home cases" statewide significantly, even while we've been hit with Delta -- even if infections in HCWs have stayed about the same as a percentage of overall cases.
Also, wrt nursing home deaths, our total for deaths prior to the Delta ramp-up among nursing home residents was just under 2000, out of our then just-under 6000 dead -- so one in three of our COVID deaths pre-Delta were in nursing homes. It's only gone up a little over 200 cases, where statewide our deaths from this pandemic during Delta have been about 1700. It may be that the sickest of LTCF residents died last year when they caught it, skewing the numbers, or more elders have opted for home care, but LTCF residents were the first group eligible and their death rate has gone down as a percentage of total deaths.
Even though they are a highly vaccinated group, though, we did have those 200+ deaths in that group. Even with the vaccine, sicker people are still at a higher risk of death/hospitalization than the average individual.
Also, just anecdotally, but the two breakthrough infections I knew of personally in my county were in people who got their shots before I was able to access it. One was in the same group as HCWs/LTCF residents (he's an EMT), the other got it because her field qualified her for the next group after his. Neither had to go in the hospital, but they were both healthy enough to have jobs and both felt pretty bad at first (then bored while they waited out their isolation). Our seniors and those who require long term care definitely need any boosters they can get to help them avoid death.
Cuz my state ain't running out of shots soon, my pharmacist (today while I was getting the flu shot) AND my doctor both said I should get my booster when I'm eligible in a month (my lungs are shite). I still would think the 2 shots would keep me from dying, but the common cold can throw me in the hospital (and the flu without a vaccine that year usually does) with a secondary pneumonia or my lungs just getting angry enough at me to need IV steroids. So just the 2 shots might not keep me from landing in the hospital, though it's doubtful I'd be on a vent or in ICU.
Still, it'd be me taking up a lot of resources that my state needs, when I can lessen that chance by getting a third shot.

(25,150 posts)He doesn't qualify for boosters because he's under 65.
My hunch is Thomas and Alito have had their boosters.
Amy has had Covid already. She's probably also fully vaccinated.

(25,150 posts)Since he's healthy and fairly young, I can't picture him running out and getting the booster. Or if he did, maybe he wouldn't tell the world because he doesn't meet the criteria for a booster.

He's not even sick.
At least seven Democrats from Texas who went to DC caught Covid in July. They were are fully vaccinated. Delta was also going around US Congress and several members of the US House also caught it. No one has died. Nor were they very sick.

(2,343 posts)We were cracking over 3,000 cases there for a few day, and the last week, we've had 2 or 3 days under 1,000.
My employer reported only two new cases for the week. There are just over 5,000 employees on campus. A month ago, we were reporting around 30 a week.
