The United States has recorded more than 700,000 deaths linked to COVID-19 on Friday, according to a count from data compiled by Reuters. In its analysis of public health data, the wire service reported that over the last week, the country had seen the average number of more than 2,000 COVID-19 deaths per day.
According to the latest health data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the country has recorded 10,333 deaths related to the coronavirus over the past seven days.
The southern states have seen some of the highest death rates in the country in the past week. Texas has recorded 1,943 deaths over the last seven days; Georgia has recorded 746; North Carolina has tallied 512 deaths; and Tennessee has recorded 409, according to the CDC.
Pennsylvania and Ohio have also recorded high seven-day death tolls at 370 and 349 respectively, according to the health agency's data.

U.S. COVID-19 death toll hits 700,000
The United States still leads the world in COVID-19 cases and deaths, accounting for 19% and 14% of all reported infections and fatalities, according to Reuters tally. Globally, the pandemic is set to surpass 5 million deaths.
Vaccination rates in some parts of the Midwest and South are lagging those in the Northeast and parts of the West Coast, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, indicating a divide between the rural and urban parts of the country.

(128,896 posts)PA has also been averaging about 5000 cases per day for the past 2 weeks and that is not coming out of Philly. We have been averaging somewhere in the range of 300 cases per day for the past month and currently have a 3% positivity rate.

(128,896 posts)They issued a press release yesterday about it (PDF) - file:///C:/Users/bjhenry/AppData/Local/Temp/MediaRelease-2021-10-01-COVID-Update.pdf
It points to the state dashboard for more (I use that daily to get the state's figures) - https://www.health.pa.gov/topics/disease/coronavirus/Pages/Cases.aspx
Was trying to get a good site to indicate the positivity (without me having to calculate it manually) and found this - https://covidactnow.org/us/pennsylvania-pa/county/erie_county/?s=23741286 and it is listing Erie with a 10% positivity.
Philly has been including the positivity in its reports and we have been bopping between 3% and 4%.

(21,433 posts)the positivity rate hovers between 9% and 11% so we're about even with Erie County. It has been like that for about a month.
I check my own county dashboard daily. It includes other data, like the number of deaths and hospitalized people, the percent of infections by vaccinated vs. unvaccinated, and the age brackets of infections and of deaths. A third of new infections now are in people under 20. The deaths have been low considering the high infection rate. Deaths are highest in people over 50, especially those over 80.
The dashboard announced yesterday that it is switching from daily to weekly reporting.

(128,896 posts)they had dropped down reporting the numbers to about twice a week (I think starting the beginning of June). Then they had to go back to daily and start up the weekly city Health Department pressers when the numbers started going back up. That's when the indoor mask requirements started getting imposed again - including for vaccinated people, along with getting more people vaccinated, and it worked to start knocking the numbers down.
I know they are probably sick of it and continue to focus on the vaccine message (and Philly is up to 70% fully vaccinated with 85% with one dose) but I know that people other than the media are following the numbers (like me) to judge the risk...
We have the other issue of the inter-state traffic between PA and NJ and Jersey had to really crack down to get their positivity down. Meanwhile PA has all those loon red counties that are just helping to fill the hospitals and morgues.
I think if anything, what we have seen is that when the transmission rate is down, you can have those larger events like they have done here and at the stadiums and not necessarily risk a catastrophic super-spreader event. But if there is a high-transmission rate, I expect that given the configurations of the small sports areas like at high schools with nothing more than bleachers, you risk have more transmission - even if outside.

(21,433 posts)here in western NY from northwestern PA and northeastern Ohio, which is why I wondered about Erie County, PA.
This is a touristy area and large events continued all summer as if there were no pandemic, contributing to high transmission. In addition, people here were very slow to start wearing masks again. The two small cities here are politically blue, but the villages, hamlets, and farm areas are deep red. Before mandatory vaccination for health care workers and some companies, the vaccination rate in the county was around 45%. Now it is up to 53%. The county health director is running public service announcements around the clock on local radio stations to inform people of the delta risks and the need for vaccinations, masks, and distancing. People are finally falling in line, but there are still a few places where I get strange looks and chuckles for wearing a mask.
Just when the tourist season slowed down and might have given us a break, the schools opened up. Now the under 20 group dominates transmissions.

(16,945 posts)write down the total of U.S. deaths and do a screen shot of at least the top of the page. Every day since May 16, 2020. (on May 16, 2020, the American death toll was 88,548. I thought it would be a way to honor the dead.
It also looks like the desth toll for 2021 is on pace to equal or surpass 2020. That is a shame, because last year, no one who died had a choice. This year, many of them are getting a choice and not interested.

(21,433 posts)But I question the claim that the US has the highest number of deaths in the world. I think that India's numbers would probably exceed ours if they had all bern reported accurately.
However, for a nation that is supposed to be advanced in medicine and literacy, our death toll and infection rate are inexcusable.
