After 40 drawings with no grand-prize winner, the Powerball jackpot ballooned to $699.8 million for Monday nights drawing, with one lucky person winning the prize, one of the largest ever in U.S. lottery history.
Mondays winning numbers were 12, 22, 54, 66, 69 and Powerball 15. One person won the jackpot, according to Powerball. California Lottery said the winner was from Morro Bay, Calif., a coastal city of about 10,000 people with a median income of about $68,000.
The winner will be able to choose between an annuity option paid over 29 years or a cash option of $496 million. Both are subject to taxes.
The identity of the winner was not immediately announced, but per California law, the winners name, as well as the location where the winning ticket was sold, is required to be made public, according to California Lottery.

I live okay with what I got, a little bit more would be nice (and a nice set of watercolor brushes lol) but the rest I would give away.
I always wanted to start a scholarship at my old high school for the most average kid. They never get anything.
I was 351 out of 702 kids. right down the middle. I wasn't eligible for anything even though I had a solid B average.

(15,751 posts)Itd be nice to at least be eligible for a scholarship. Even if another middle won, Id be happy to be part of it.

(8,703 posts)Should only pay corporate level taxes on it. Pay what the Zuck and Trump pay in taxes.
Whats fair for the goose.

(94,452 posts)Why SHOULD they pay a lower Corporate Tax rate?
Traildogbob
(8,703 posts)Because corporate never pays near what a lottery winner pays. I know it seems trivial, but giving the gubment near half of your winnings sucks. Especially with what gubment does with it. The winner is gonna be very good, but what about someone that worked hard all their life and won one million. Almost half of the to GQP big spenders for their rich buddies sucks. Never played so I will never win anyway.

(94,452 posts)So, rich people SHOULDN'T pay high taxes, especially on money they didn't earn through work?
Traildogbob
(8,703 posts)My initial post was in a sarcastic manner, saying a newly made millionaire cant get the special tax rate of GQP filthy rich. Everyone, Every Corp should pay an equal rate. No loopholes. My first job at 14 years old, laying railroad ties landscaping was .75 cents per hour. I was taxed. Now I pay taxes On Retirement and Social Security, (thanks Ronnie, taxed SS to cover rich man tax breaks for his trickle down.)
The Zucks, Bezos, Trumps all of em should pay exactly what we all pay. Yes, even lotto winners.

reception to follow. But thanks for asking.
Out of curiosity, why do you object to rich people paying too marginal tax rates?

Maybe I would look to generate interest in such fields as Culinary Arts (with money for students to study cuisines from around the world and bring them back).
