One person in California wins Monday’s $699.8 million Powerball jackpot after 40 drawings without a winner

After 40 drawings with no grand-prize winner, the Powerball jackpot ballooned to $699.8 million for Monday night’s drawing, with one lucky person winning the prize, one of the largest ever in U.S. lottery history.

Monday’s winning numbers were 12, 22, 54, 66, 69 and Powerball 15. One person won the jackpot, according to Powerball. California Lottery said the winner was from Morro Bay, Calif., a coastal city of about 10,000 people with a median income of about $68,000.

The winner will be able to choose between an annuity option paid over 29 years or a cash option of $496 million. Both are subject to taxes.

The identity of the winner was not immediately announced, but per California law, the winner’s name, as well as the location where the winning ticket was sold, is required to be made public, according to California Lottery.

There’s a little stand in Morro Bay that make one hell of a grilled halibut sandwich. Get extra fries for the sea gulls that sit on the table right next to you.

But I think it’d be cool if they have 699 winners a million dollars. That’d seriously change many more lives for the better.

Is there any precedent for really big lottery winners to do important big things - like the former MS. Bezos?

There was even a woman who GAMBLED away her winnings. The ones that become philanthropists are quite happy.

like you said, the ones that became philanthropists are happy.

I live okay with what I got, a little bit more would be nice (and a nice set of watercolor brushes lol) but the rest I would give away.

I always wanted to start a scholarship at my old high school for the most average kid. They never get anything.

I was 351 out of 702 kids. right down the middle. I wasn't eligible for anything even though I had a solid B average.

It’d be nice to at least be eligible for a scholarship. Even if another middle won, I’d be happy to be part of it.

Because corporate never pays near what a lottery winner pays. I know it seems trivial, but giving the gubment near half of your winnings sucks. Especially with what gubment does with it. The winner is gonna be very good, but what about someone that worked hard all their life and won one million. Almost half of the to GQP big spenders for their rich buddies sucks. Never played so I will never win anyway.

My initial post was in a sarcastic manner, saying a newly made millionaire can’t get the special tax rate of GQP filthy rich. Everyone, Every Corp should pay an equal rate. No loopholes. My first job at 14 years old, laying railroad ties landscaping was .75 cents per hour. I was taxed. Now I pay taxes On Retirement and Social Security, (thanks Ronnie, taxed SS to cover rich man tax breaks for his trickle down.)
The Zucks, Bezos, Trumps all of em should pay exactly what we all pay. Yes, even lotto winners.

Maybe I would look to generate interest in such fields as Culinary Arts (with money for students to study cuisines from around the world and bring them back).
