Sweden suspends Moderna vaccine for those 30 and under

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) Swedish health authorities on Wednesday suspended the use of Modernas COVID-19 vaccine for those ages 30 and under, saying the move was done out of precaution.
The reason for the pausing is signals of an increased risk of side effects such as inflammation of the heart muscle or the pericardium the double-walled sac containing the heart and the roots of the main vessels, Swedens Public Health Agency said in a statement. The risk of being affected is very small.
Anders Tegnell, Swedens chief epidemiologist, said they follow the situation closely and act quickly to ensure that vaccinations against COVID-19 are always as safe as possible and at the same time provide effective protection against the disease.
In July, the European Medicines Agency recommended authorizing Modernas COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 12 to 17, the first time the shot has been authorized for people under 18.

(35,197 posts)Except it wasn't just the "under 30" crowd.
It was widely applauded. Better that 500 die than .02 fall ill and run the risk of death.

(44,962 posts)Because it's pretty rare, one would have to test hundreds of thousands of people, which is considerably more than number of people who participate in clinical trials.
Moreover, they reported the risk of myocarditis, which is often overlooked.
A study that did a random check for myocarditis in apparently healthy males who reported no symptoms--but actually did have them--found a surprisingly large number of cases. That calls into question the use of any baseline that's been reported in the literature before about 9 months ago.
That study's new baseline wasn't much different from the presumably J&J-induced rate.

(136 posts)I also received the Moderna vaccine; not too concerned about the Swedish guy grandstanding to get attention. Sweden's approach to Covid was totally flawed.

Do you live outside the US?
Hubby and I got Moderna and are waiting for more news on it ourselves.

(22,671 posts)Moderna vaccine? The country's approach to Covid would be unrelated to a scientific study detecting a possibly significant side effect of the vaccine. Different people involved, different methods.

(44,962 posts)The side effect is already known, the same is observed in the US.

(44,962 posts)It appears to be somewhat more frequent with Moderna than Pfizer, probably because Moderna uses a higher dose of mRNA.

(792 posts)A one in a billion chance of a side effect in exchange for how many thousands of COVID deaths? Utterly ridiculous.

(19,114 posts)His hands-off approach to COVID at the start of the pandemic has resulted in almost 15,000 dead Swedes.
In a nation of a little over 10 million people, that's extremely high.
