Mussolini's granddaughter tops polls in Rome council vote

Rachele Mussolini, granddaughter of the Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini, won the highest number of votes in Rome's city council elections, official results showed Wednesday.

Standing for the Fratelli d'Italia party, which descends from the neo-fascist conservative MSI party-- or Italian Social Movement party -- Mussolini won 8,264 votes.

In an interview with newspaper La Repubblica on Wednesday, Mussolini said she believes voters were focused less on her surname and more on her "initiatives" during her service at the City Council.

"At school they used to point at me, but then Rachele emerged and the person [that I am] prevailed over the surname, however burdensome that name is," she added.

If what i'm getting from wikipedia is correct, its a 48 member governing body.

So if people were running from at least 11 parties, for 48 seats.. i could see how the biggest vote getter would still not have all that many votes

That said, Im getting tangled in the hows of the election, as wikipedia seems to be indicating seats are awarded to parties based on proportion, not to individual persons. Which would seem to be incorrect, if the article is accurately describing the sitiuation, so.. maybe we have someone on DU that has a working knowledge of how this particular electoral system works?
