Pennsylvania attorney general Josh Shapiro announces his bid for governor
Source: CNN
Pennsylvania's Democratic attorney general Josh Shapiro, who fought against former President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state, announced Wednesday that he is running for governor.
"I understand people feel like our politics are divided and broken right now, but we can't just take our ball and go home. There's too much on the line," Shapiro said in a campaign video released Wednesday. "We all have a responsibility to show up, stand up and fight for what's right. As governor, I'll stay in the game -- no matter what."
Shapiro will formally launch his campaign Wednesday morning in Pittsburgh and then hold a "hometown rally" in Montgomery County later in the day, his campaign said.
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat first elected in 2014, is term limited, leaving the field wide open.

(128,772 posts)There are nothing but a bunch of fucking RW loons running on the GOP side so we just need to make sure to get the turnout machine going to get him in and break another precedent (Wolf's original election where he beat Corbett, broke a precedent).
He opted to go with this race vs the Senate race, which definitely gave him a boost and, as the Philly Inquirer noted in an article earlier this week, allowed him "clear the field".
He worked his way up to that position (and within the political world) in terms of not only experience at the federal level as an aide, but through interactions with "grassroots" organizations, starting early in his political career. And his appearances on TV have definitely helped make him a "national" figure.

(3,245 posts)Toomey's seat will be open (yes, I'm a Fetterman supporter) which will be a crucial pickup.
Also, seeing how the state General Assembly has been operating since 2020, there may be a few state rep seats that could be up for grabs.
There's a lot at stake for us Pennsylvanians come November 2022.

(128,772 posts)"more competitive" with respect to the primaries by bringing up a few here in the Phillly area who have thrown their hats in the ring. And I know that as much as I like the leadership qualities and medical background of Val Arkoosh, and as much as I like the firebrand brashness of Malcolm Kenyatta, no one on the other side of this state really knows who they are... but they know who Fetterman is (and that is who I have supported from day one), and he has an excellent shot.
And in terms of turnout - it's more to have enough to get around the types of GOP shenanigans that we just saw a year ago - particularly here in Philly, with the constant nonsensical attacks and lawsuits. It has to be decisive.
I just hope we can find just as strong an AG to replace Shapiro because that is going to be a critical position.

(3,245 posts)yes, the media will want a horse race in the primaries. That's a given, imho.
And I don't disagree either with your views on Dr. Arkoosh and Mr. Kenyatta, neither have the state wide appeal which is what I've said since the beginning. I suspect both will be out of the race by early next year simply because they won't have the funds to sustain a long campaign.
And, yes, it has to be decisive, which I believe it will.

(3,493 posts)2021 is just as important and the election is now only weeks away. I just home Dems in Philly and Pittsburgh show up and vote this year.

The R candidate ran a lot of TV spots during the late summer, but now McLaughlin, the Dem, is dominating the airwaves.
If Dems pick up this seat, the state supreme court would be 6-1 D. Then Dems would have to retain Max Baer's seat later as he is close to mandatory retirement age of 75.

(3,493 posts)How the PA Supreme Court is picked. they would basically divide the state up into districts with a Judge from each district. I'm sure the Repubs would nearly dominate the court if that change is made.
And it will be up for a vote. But state measures are placed on the primary not general election so most independents and democrats probably wouldn't even vote. That's how the Republicans roll in PA. Make sure to put things up when only their supporters usually show up.

(15,276 posts)He's been setting himself up to be governor for a long time.
It's been the usual outcome that the governorship flips from D to R and visa versa every 8 years, but when Wolf was elected, it was the first time an incumbent governor (Corbett) was denied a 2nd term maybe ever. If Shapiro wins, then the 8 year D/R switch cycle would also be broken.
Don't underestimate the impact of the grand jury investigation into the Catholic Church's practice of covering up abuse either. There were a lot of victims who finally got some measure of justice. They and their families are grateful to Shapiro for that.
Then there's the 48 criminal charges Shapiro just filed against Energy Transfer, LLP, the company building the Mariner East 2 pipeline. This outfit has damaged property, wetlands, waterways, etc across the commonwealth. Affected locals, in red counties and blue, are pretty mad about it.
