Strike dodged with deal between film and TV crews, studios

LOS ANGELES (AP) An 11th-hour deal was reached Saturday, averting a strike of film and television crews that would have seen some 60,000 behind-the-scenes workers walk off their jobs and would have frozen productions in Hollywood and across the U.S.
After days of marathon negotiations, representatives from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and from the studios and entertainment companies who employ them reached the three-year contract agreement before a Monday strike deadline, avoiding a serious setback for an industry that had just gotten back to work after long pandemic shutdowns.
This is a Hollywood ending, union president Matthew Loeb said. Our members stood firm.
The workers still must vote to approve it, but the strike has been called off with the tentative deal.

(6,911 posts)Most on-air news reporters are SAG-AFTRA, I believe. Live TV in a studio is operated by IATSE crews frequently in major markets, but nonunion in smaller markets. At least I think its nonunion the way companies buy TV stations and replace local live news studio crews with robots operated remotely.
All movie and TV production is IATSE for the crew, SAG for talent, and Teamsters for transportation.

(31,163 posts)I used to make TV commercials. Not nearly on the same scale as TV or film, but the hours could be just as brutal. Time (counted in days) is money. And morning light means being up hours before sunrise. Want a sunset? Thats one long day.

(6,911 posts)The support by people on DU has been great, thanks to everyone who posted encouraging comments. I love my job and make sure producers get their moneys worth.
Ive worked 22-hour days years back, and have seen people die falling asleep at the wheel from long hours. A minimum day is 12 hours. By most other industry standards those are long hours. But I love my work and would give 24 hours.
However, my body says STFU, youre an old man now. A regular schedule over 12 hours leads to burnout, and a mans got to know his limitations as famously said by a character named Dirty Harry. This contract recognizes the quality-of-life issues that must accompany fair economic wage numbers. I hope the membership votes to endorse the contact.
Gotta run, early call and the show must go on. 😂😂
