Neera Tanden named staff secretary for President Biden

Source: Washington Post

Neera Tanden was named the next White House staff secretary on Friday morning, putting her in the nerve center of the building charged with overseeing the paper flow for President Biden, according to a White House official briefed on the move. White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain announced the move in a morning staff call.

She has been working for Biden since May and will also retain her current title of White House senior adviser, which has allowed her to advise the president on a wide range of issues, the person said. Tanden will replace Jessica Hertz, a former Obama administration attorney who worked more recently in the government affairs office of Facebook. White House officials have praised Hertz as a highly regarded, well-liked member of the team.

Hertz will leave the job on Friday, a planned departure that was first reported by Politico last week, and Tanden will start on Monday, the official said. The staff secretary, who reports to the chief of staff, traditionally plays the role of both traffic cop and honest broker in the White House, with control over the documents that make it to the president, whether they be briefing books or decision memos laying out the arguments on major decisions.

The White House staff secretary has often served as a steppingstone for other roles in government. Former White House counsel Harriet Miers, Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh and former White House chief of staff John D. Podesta, a mentor for Tanden, have all previously held the job.

She and others did a lot of good work with CAP, particularly since we have so few "liberal" think tanks to get messaging out and discuss policy.

The bad guys have a “think tank” sprouting up on every frickin’ intersection in every town in America. And what do WE have? A mere handful.

I do not understand why Democrats don’t get this. It’s the most urgent, effective, consequential, and high-priority tool in the tool box. Strategic MESSAGING!!! The bad guys are experts. We’re not even out of preschool on it. (And yes. I said “bad guys”. I do that deliberately AND repeatedly. Because MESSAGING. And, because that’s basically what they ARE, here. )

The RW have a billion "think tanks" (a bunch probably including a PAC too), where some have "annual" conferences that get "wall to wall" media coverage of their circus performances like CPAC and "Focus on the Family".

I guess because a number of liberal organizations are more into actually doing work for the cause, they are more "on the ground" focused rather than in front of the camera. I suppose some of the earlier ones that were more "out there" included "Move On" and "Occupy", and more recently "Indivisible", but about all that is left that actually has annual "conventions" is "Netroots" which was spawned out of DKos but at least has an "annual" event that gets some media attention.

Hell... The "Sturgis" idiocy gets more attention than anything we put on. We need the equivalent of a "The Lincoln Project" and a "Meidas Touch" arm of the party doing the messaging and that will let the other orgs do what they do at the "grassroots" level. Of course that requires $$$$ and $$$ should be devoted to it.

I mean, this is like DUH !!! Guys and gals, get with it.... And we don't have the media on out side to help so we have to work even harder at it.

But jeeze, hire somebody from Toyota, or KFC or... heck Wegmans!

it's that "we" communicate with our base "differently". I.e., we don't get off on "outrage politics" filled with anger and FUD, literally being pumped out 24/7. And of course that then generates a "bleed scene" that prompts the "If it bleeds, it leads" businesses to make sure they are right there to report on the side show, no matter how crazy the story is.

I would think those who gravitate to RW nonsense tend to be those who possess little "empathy" so they are not actually "feeling" that hate and anger that they consume and impose on others, whereas those who do have "empathy" would end up in therapy being in a constant state of fury.

I do think we need more firebrands like our Lt. Gov. Fetterman here in PA (and he has certainly been "out there", providing enough theatrics for the media to have him on, but also using that time to get good messaging out there that is needed). But the reality is that we need need the big monied "liberals" to BUY some of these communications outlets - and be willing to program them and keep them going for an extended period of time, including "operating at a loss" (which much of the RW did/does with their outlets), while considering doing that a "donation to the cause".

If you don't "own the megaphone", then you will never get your message out there.

It's true though... You need your "attack dog" messengers that have tightly-controlled messages ("controlled" meaning without continually going off-script with stuff that could become a distraction). "Move On" used to do that in the past but there should be a whole new generation of young activists who are expert at social media who could spearhead something.

I love her mind and her commitment, it's her nasally voice that sets my ears on edge.

I know, it's petty. But still. I can deal.
