China passes law to reduce pressure on children from homework

Source: AFP

The government has imposed several rules in recent months aimed at combating activities it considers harmful to the development of China's youth.

Beijing has already banned minors from playing online games for more than three hours a week in an effort to tackle addiction. It has also launched a crackdown on private tutoring companies, ordering them to go non-profit.

I’d hate for them to slide back to our education system.

Being a good test taker does not mean you're a good student. I taught in the system for 12 years.

Homework does not equal more and better learning! The large amount of homework in our high schools ruined our family life for four years. Our daughter had no more time for family life and the majority of her free time was spent doing homework. No fun times and it left us a legacy of alienation that continues to this day. The long term consequences of the homework craze to "get ahead" produces workaholic kids who are then way behind on social skills, real life lessons learning and most of all the value of JOY, FUN and THE ARTS.

I don't feel I lack social skills, real life lessons, joy, fun and I have been a professional classical musician pretty much my entire life...

I had plenty of 'play' time as a kid, and used it...

Of course my experience is also anecdotal.

years later. He told me I gave more homework than his Middle School teachers. I asked him if he knew why and he didn't. I told him the truth, the parents wanted me to and basically forced my hand. This was a Gifted and Talented Cluster class with mostly high achievers and a few average achievers. This particular student was more interested in skating than school. I remember speaking to his mother who complained that she didn't have time to check up on his schoolwork and was not aware he was 6 weeks behind in his research paper and somehow that was my fault.

... consistently produce some of the smartest university graduates in the elite U.S. Universities.

As a former school board member, I remember the demands to "let kids be kids". Let kids play in sports regardless of their academic scores. Lowering the standards was the common demand. Rarely did we hear demands to require more academic excellence.

In this case why would China now seem to follow our example?

child labor is very common among poor rural families over there. Some of it is OK but some is abusive and dangerous work that leaves kids burned, maimed, or killed.

Once they hit middle school they should begin to get some and it should increase for high school, they are going to need to do homework to be prepared for college.

As for the private tutoring companies, all the foreign ones have already been chased out of China in recent years. There is a wave of nationalism and xenophobia being stoked by the Chinese government. All the China bloggers I watch have declared that the party is over for westerners in China for the forseeable future.
