Rep. Jim Banks suspended from Twitter for misgendering trans government official Dr. Rachel Levine

Source: NBC News

Twitter suspended the account of Indiana Rep. Jim Banks on Saturday after the Republican congressman intentionally misgendered Assistant Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine, the first transgender person to hold an office that requires a Senate confirmation.

Banks, who represents the northeastern corner of the state, was responding to the news that Levine became the first woman to be awarded the title of four-star officer, saying the title was taken and honor were taken by a “man.”

Twitter said the comment violated its hateful conduct policy, which prohibits the “targeted misgendering or deadnaming of transgender individuals.”

The platform temporarily locked Banks' account, saying he would regain access upon deleting the tweet.

He's a troll-culture warrior. He gets his trolling in - and gets the glory of "Twitter Banned Me!?!?!" attention. You can bank on the fact that he is fundraising off of this.

when she was the PA Health Secretary. Not long after, when she had had enough, she made a poignant statement during one of the COVID pressers just over a year ago -

Served somewhere overseas — Afghanistan or Iraq, can’t remember. While he was gone, his wife filled his seat in the Indiana General Assembly and was just as bad.

He basically rode his military service to Congress.

We have a state rep who “accidentally” joined Oath Keepers about 10 years ago and is now claiming amnesia.

She seemed intelligent and competent, cared very much about the work and I was glad when she was appointed to the new position. I can’t believe the way these Republicans have turned into such cruel sadists. Human existence is tough enough without this shit

I am glad that this bigot was suspended

Republicans in Congress are outraged at Twitter after the social media website suspended Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) for violating the site's rules against hate speech.

Banks intentionally misgendered Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine, the highest-ranking openly transgender official in U.S. history. Levine is a highly respected public health expert who served as Pennsylvania's physician general from 2015 to 2018 and as the state's secretary of health from 2018 to 2021.

Last Tuesday, Banks posted a tweet mocking the news that Levine had been sworn in as a four-state admiral for the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

"The title of first female four-star office gets taken by a man," Banks wrote.
