McAuliffe and Youngkin are in a dead heat with one week to Virginia governor election, poll shows
Source: USA Today
Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin are tied at roughly 45% each, according to a USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll released Tuesday. But roughly 5% of likely voters say they are still undecided a week before the Nov. 2 vote.
David Paleologos, director of Suffolk University Political Research Center, said the race is simply a "dead heat" and will boil down to which party can get out its voters.
"It's down to turnout," Paleologos said.

(94,482 posts)Simple answer: Republicans (esp. in NOVA) voted for Biden against Trump, but won't automatically vote for a downtick Democrat when the Republican isn't a QANON/MAGA nut.

(14,687 posts)There are lots of reasons from people not answering calls to not engaging pollsters on any level... unless they are activists.
Polls are trash. They are coins to the pollsters, and the media keeps paying them.
But they mean nothing any longer.
It's 100% turnout.
The polls simply aren't accurately measuring voter actions. They only reflect the political views of those they reach; and they may not even be voters, despite how they answer questions.
Forget polls. They don't mean shit. Treat your actions like we are always 5 points down until votes are (accurately) counted.

(26,727 posts)The problem is that last year it was many many MANY more.
It's going to be a nail-biter. Fairfax has reportedly changed their process and will be reporting late. We're hearing whispers to expect Youngkin to be ahead on election day until fairly late in the evening.

(19,803 posts)we had an election for Gov here in WA , cant remember the year....between Christine Gregoire and Dino Rossi.
First count he won, next count SHE won, Third count she won by 140 votes or something like that.

(15,367 posts)The fact is most Democrats hate voting on Election Day, and most Republicans love voting on Election Day. I don't know why that is, but it's true.

(7,153 posts)Typically, the pollsters miss the older Repugs that screen their phone calls, won't talk to pollsters, but on voting day toddle to the polls and vote R. Historically, this means the VA repug vote percentage goes up three to five percent.
So with a tied poll, add three to five points to Rs to make it forty eight to forty five. Or worse.
WE NEED TURNOUT.
Or else there may be people traveling outside of VA for abortions.

Ridiculous? Yep! But you know damn well that, were Youngkin the Democrat in the race, the Republicreeps would manage to shoehorn such speculation into the campaign!

(21,287 posts)the MSM, which is right wing, keeps saying that the polls say the race is tied, but they are citing 1 or 2 polls. The average of all the polls has McAuliffe ahead by 2 to 3%. Still close but just saying.

(3,152 posts)...that McAuliffe and youngkin are neck in neck tells me we haven't convinced enough people of the gravity of 1/6 and the republican threat...
...we are being threatened by republican fascists with the overthrow of our democracy and government and the Virginia race is a 'dead heat'...?...something's wrong

(8,650 posts)This could be a disaster if a Trumper Repub wins VA Gov. They need to pull out all the stops and make sure we win this. Perhaps some ads about how Youngkin supports Trump and some ads about Texas abortion laws that might come to Virginia with Youngkin Gov.
