Biden, Dems get low marks on spending talks: AP-NORC poll

WASHINGTON (AP) As President Joe Biden and Democrats try to get a roughly $2 trillion package over the finish line, a new poll shows that fewer than half of Americans approve of how they have handled the spending bill. And many say they know little to nothing about it.
Its a troubling sign for a party that hopes to make the social spending investments the hallmark of their midterm election campaigns next year.
The new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds that 36% of Americans say they approve of Bidens handling of the negotiations over the bill, while 41% disapprove and 23% say they neither approve nor disapprove. Fewer than half say they know a lot or some about the proposals.
I dont place all the blame on him, but I think that, as a president, as a commander-in-chief, I think he could be doing a lot more to get people on board with his plan, said Gary Hines, 65, a Democratic voter from Philadelphia who emphasized he supports the various elements of Bidens plan, from expanding the number of people with health insurance, to making child care more affordable, to doing more to curb climate change.

They tried to overthrow the government. Honestly, I wish we could just exile the lot of them.
By this time next year, the different elements of both plans will become much more visible to people and that will help us in the midterms.
All the media is informing us is what's not in it.

(7,839 posts)The spending is over 10 years
It is fully paid for
It represents therefore 2 years of military spending
Over 10 years the money is one fifth that of the military annual
Billionaires and oligarchs and their republican knights in shining corporate media armour are only ones crying

(13,964 posts)will depend on if the media covers it like they should. Since Im not placing my hope in the media, Dems need to run ads on tv and social media touting the new bills.

(6,974 posts)We're in DEEP trouble then, because this mostly corporate, right-winged shill of a media is NOT going to cover it as they should. They're now mostly on the GQP US Taliban Party side. I cannot stomach watching these Sunday morning political shows, where the likes of Chuck Toad--with his both sides do it ass and Mrs. But her emails Mitchell almost NEVER hit back at the GQP. Most allow them spew lies about what's going on politically, then IF a Dem comes on they challenge THEM to death I hear I can only hear about what a horrible job these journalists do from friends, or watch small snippets about what they talk about on youtube. I don't watch George Stickanapplein his mouth over on ABC, and does anyone still watch CBS' Face the Nation over on Sunday mornings? I don't watch CNN or Jake Tapper either, and Van Jones is an ass.
Damn, Chris Wallace of Faux Noose seems to at least challenge the GQP on their smears/lies they continue to get away with telling.

(2,248 posts)Their focus will be interparty conflicts, what's NOT included, how much it will cost, lack of bipartsianship, blah, blah, blah.
Instead, the focus needs to be on the widdest possible benefits to the largest amount of Americans and Democratic attention on the 99 percent.

(15,278 posts)It's all hype and drama all the time at CNN and MSNBC. I have not seen one primetime MSNBC show devote an entire show, let alone a segment, talking about what is in the bill since the 3.5T blueprint passed the Senate.

(6,228 posts)the repubs who are doing all they can to make sure the country doesn't move forward? Are folks really that dumb about what is going on?
LenaBaby61
(6,974 posts)Yes, given all of these right-winged polls they probably mostly see now. Most people don't bother keeping themselves informed because most are too busy working to sit down and actually watch news, and even if they did, the mostly corporate media's a MESS. ALL polls are not bad, but most ARE when you finish disseminating them, and see that mostly older, right-leaning, white people with landlines are polled who live in the eastern part of the country. You are starting to see some pollsters interview younger people with cell phones, but still Blacks, Hispanics, the young, Native Americans, Asians are under-polled. Remember how CNN and the NY Times were too busy interviewing white, right winged males and right winged women about what they thought about tRump before, during and after his failed presidency? These networks almost never interviewed Dems about what they thought about tRump's presidency, before, during or after his failed presidency.

(15,325 posts)Actually Biden & his Dwmocrats should byuy their own Media News Operation just to set the record straight on a 24/7 basis.
Report on Biden's successes rather than the 24/7 beatdown disasterous narrative we hear from Soc Media & CNN, MSNBS, et al.
THAT's what it will take.
No one knows what amazing hurdles Biden & his Dems have really slogged thru to get what they have because MEDIA refuses to say that part.
I see it hrre on DU all the time. Every dam ed day.
Not a iota of praise is spoken.
Why is that? Where does this 24/7 negative only narrative come from?
It's not Biden's base.
So who's pissing on Biden & his Democrats?
We know what their intent is, who are they?
LenaBaby61
(6,974 posts)Not gonna happen, but at least we do have Free Speech Tv, Lawrence, Rach, Chris Hays and Joy, Packman and other liberals on youtube out there to help combat the mostly corporate GQP spin machine known as the Main stream media.
Budi
(15,325 posts)Packman? Same.
Not one of MSM has done their job as they should.
When every positive is followed by an opposing 'discussion' in the negative, then that is just a half assed way of getting around presenting news that hasn't been 'trending' all day on every other source.
Money & Media is the problem. And I have yet to hear one outlet mentioning other than what headlines the others.
There is so much more they could & should be presenting.

I hear what you're saying, but they are far more balanced than the corporate, mostly right-winged paid-for media/& on line newspapers. They're are still a few good columnists over at the NY Times, but I wouldn't use that paper to line my birdcage if I had a bird.
Dems can't or won't pool their monies to get at least 2 media outlets. It's not like the $$ isn't there.

(92,136 posts)It is a very bias analysis, and it isn't until well into the article that it is mentioned that republicans are viewed even more negatively than Democrats on it, but they add the false wording that "republicans who have been shut out from the talks over the bill", without mentioning that republicans refused and did not want to be part of the reconciliation bill.
They also fail to mention that a 50-50 Senate can hardly be considered a majority
In other words, the analysis wants to leave the impression that Democrats cannot get anything done, and are in disarray
It should be noted that a good percentage have no idea what is in the bill, and while some of that may be attributed to "messaging", I would suggest it has more to do with the press failure to cover the specifics, at least the television media

The larger picture..do Americans overall approve of things in the bill YES...70-79%

The goal is go get something done and if the people taking the poll think they can do better, they should run for office.

(219 posts)Is all we read and see. It's tiring and beyond offensive how the MSM treats Republicans as engaging in just normal political behavior. Nothing in the news about how they are undermining voting rights. Nothing about the Insurrection Party being obstructionist and trying to tear down the institutions that are holding democracy together with spit and bailing wire. If the AP leaned any further to the right it would be called Fox News.
What's happening, MSM, is this: the Democrats are engaging in the 'legislative process' aka 'sausage making' while the Republicans attempt another coup. Kinda missing the big story, ain't cha? Maybe after the fascists' take over the media will wake up. Nah, too unrealistic to think that.
