Biden urges fractious Dems to unite around $1.75T megabill

Source: Politico

Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi revved their party toward a House vote as soon as Thursday on a $550 billion Senate-passed infrastructure bill, even as progressives remain undecided about taking what one called "a leap of faith in the president."

Soon after the White House outlined a framework for a $1.75 trillion deal on social spending, Biden made a high-stakes appearance on Capitol Hill to sell Pelosi's caucus on it. While some liberal priorities were included in the package of climate, health care and other social policy investments, others were left on the cutting-room floor — and House progressives remain noncommittal about whether to vote yes on infrastructure given their uncertainty about the framework's Senate future.

The Congressional Progressive Caucus held its own meeting after Biden left, as its chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) held off on where her group stood after the president’s pitch for its votes.

“We have had a position of needing to see the legislative text and voting on both bills," Jayapal said, referring to the infrastructure bill and the separate, still-unwritten social spending bill. "And we'll see where people are. But I think a lot of people are still in that place."

There were reports that he was calling House members asking them to vote against the bill but in all honesty, I haven’t had time to read more than headlines on that.

I’m sure we will know more by press time this afternoon.

President Biden on Thursday unveiled a new $1.75 trillion package to overhaul the country’s health-care, education, climate and tax laws, muscling through a slew of policy disagreements and internecine political feuds that had stalled his economic agenda for months.

The announcement marked a critical moment in Biden’s tenure, prompting the president to pay a visit to Capitol Hill and call on Democrats to adopt the spending along with a second, roughly $1.2 trillion package to improve the country’s roads, bridges, pipes, ports and Internet connections.

“We spent hours and hours and hours over months and months working on this,” Biden said in televised remarks. “No one got everything they wanted, including me, but that’s what compromise is. That’s consensus, and that’s what I ran on.”

Biden’s moves reflect a pivotal decision to assume ownership of the sweeping safety-net proposal in a new way. He is investing enormous political capital in the new plan — which follows days of intensive, secretive meetings with key lawmakers — and is essentially warning any wary Democrats that they risk damaging him and the party if they do not get on board.

Every single one of these deals goes down to the wire like this, it's simply how things get done in Washington.

There should be no panic, this is pretty normal stuff, if you feel panic, tune out until tomorrow and then you'll find out what got passed.
