VATICAN CITY After his first meeting with Pope Francis during his administration, President Biden said the pope called him a good Catholic who should keep receiving Communion. During their 90 minutes together, Francis also blessed Bidens rosary, according to the president, who called the visit wonderful. Bidens description of the meeting, and about the pontiffs support for him to receive Communion, came as the president was meeting later in the day with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
The topic of Communion did not come up in the Vaticans brief recap of the conversation, nor in edited video it provided of pleasantries after the two leaders had ended their private meeting. The Vatican did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Though Biden and Francis had met three times before including right after Franciss inauguration in 2013 this time both men find themselves in a more turbulent moment. In the United States, the same conservative bishops generally resistant to Franciss inclusive style have argued that Bidens support of abortion rights is a Catholic failing.
In recent months, they have campaigned to deny Communion to the president and other politicians with similar views a debate that will come to a head in two weeks, when U.S. bishops meet in Baltimore. In the conversation at the Vatican, according to the White House, Biden thanked the pope for his advocacy for the worlds poor and those suffering from hunger, conflict, and persecution. The two also discussed the climate crisis, and Biden lauded the pope for his advocacy to ensure the pandemic ends for everyone through vaccine sharing and an equitable global economic recovery.
A White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe a private meeting, said the engagement between the two was very warm when the delegation arrived in the room. There was laughter and clear rapport between President Biden and Pope Francis, the official said. After the conversation ended, Biden and the pope remained in the Vaticans apostolic palace for another 15 minutes, joining a broader delegation and exchanging gifts.

I think the Bishops are having temper tantrums, among other things.

(3,572 posts)The Vatican is also a city-state with a neutral charter and an observing member of the U.N. Francis has been pushing for climate change solutions, and supported the Paris agreement. Since the G20 meeting is on climate, it makes sense for the two to meet.

The communion wine, though
now thats some pretty strong shit. Depending on where you sit, you can smell it from the altar. A priest once said that he felt tipsy after having to consume the leftovers afterward, and he was not a small man.
