Queen Elizabeth II, 95, is advised to rest for 2 weeks

Source: AP

By DANICA KIRKA

LONDON (AP) — Queen Elizabeth II has been advised to rest for at least the next two weeks, accepting doctors’ recommendations to take on only light duties and not travel, Buckingham Palace said Friday.

The decision comes days after the 95-year-old sovereign underwent medical tests and spent the night at London’s King Edward VII’s Hospital, her first such stay in in eight years. Elizabeth has continued to work since then and will press on with desk-based duties, but will skip the Nov. 13 Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, an event meant to honor the British and Commonwealth men and women who have fought wars, disasters and pandemics to protect and defend the nation.

“However, it remains the queen’s firm intention to be present for the National Service of Remembrance on Remembrance Sunday, on 14th November,” the palace said.

It is significant that the palace statement highlighted the wish of the monarch to attend Remembrance Sunday ceremonies, as it is major event on the sovereign’s calendar and one to which she has attached great importance.

She has been a woman of great courage and dedicated to her country. She is an imperfect human, like the rest of us, but she did not cheat people for that wealth. She is no Trump.

The 2006 movie about her, "The Queen," starring Helen Mirren, is very entertaining and features such obscure details as the fact that she is an accomplished auto mechanic.

whereas Margaret would have.

Queen Elizabeth has oft said her happiest times are at Balmoral, where she can be with her dogs and horses.

A sentiment I can totally understand.

It was against her father’s wishes, but she did it anyway. She was taught to be a truck mechanic, grease under her fingernails and all.

Royals are supposed to understand the military and throughout history the men have often served when young. When she first met her future husband he was engrossed in a Naval career. In any case, she, the future Queen, did her bit.

As for her longevity, yes, she has good health care, but her mother lived to be something like 101. Her father died fairly early on, I think of lung cancer, having been a smoker.

As Queen, she has an allowance from the government (whatever they call it) but she also has family money and wealth that is her own to grow and spend as she chooses.

Royal pageantry deliberately plays to the tourist trade and has since her grandfather’s time, and it brings in a lot of money to the country as a whole. That’s not a grift; that’s canny. The anti-monarchists would miss that if it went away.

Royal family or not, people would still go to the UK to see that castles and all. Not having a monarch doesn't hurt French or German tourism.

Germany did not have a unified nation until 1870's and France tossed it's traditional monarchy a couple hundred years ago. Neither nation EVER had a tourism industry in which a monarchy played a role.

That is NOT the case for the UK.

It WOULD impact UK tourism.... I have no doubt about that. You could argue that it would make a transition, but it would matter. https://www.insider.com/oprah-interview-with-harry-meghan-effect-on-royals-tourism-2021-3#:~:text=In%202017%2C%20brand%20valuation%20consultancy,monarchy%20to%20the%20British%20economy.

It is important to remember that the history of the British political system is rooted in feudalism, in which there is no separation between the personal property of aristocrats and the that of the nation-state. In feudalism, the aristocrats WERE the nation-state. There has been a transition were the vast majority of assets have transitioned away from the personal property of the aristocrats to the state though the conceit of it being "crown property" remains even though it is not literally true.

In point of fact, the royals are not even close to the richest people in Britain. If ALL their property were seized and nationalized, it would barely make a blip in the British economy. I think the thrashing against the royals is largely emotional. If you look at the link above, just TWO years of "royals" tourism brings in more money than would be brought in seizing ALL the assets of the royals (which would never happen). In short, it makes NO economic sense.

So the fact they keep releasing bits of information is also unusual.
They are spoon feeding news to the public.

You have a good fashion eye to see the tailoring issue!

She has access to some of the world's finest tailors, so it is odd that her dresses are not taken in for this weight loss.

Yes she is a very old lady, and health issues are a concern.

The rumor is that she had a serious fall, hence the walking now with a cane, no alcohol and hospital tests.
If true, she is very lucky that she did not break bones. Perhaps she had a concussion, and that is why
she has been ordered to rest.

At any rate, with her advanced age, the sentiment is that it is time for Charles and William to step up to the plate
and take on her duties to a large extent.
