G20 make commitments on climate neutrality, coal financing

ROME (AP) — Leaders of the world’s biggest economies made a compromise commitment Sunday to reach carbon neutrality “by or around mid-century” as they wrapped up a two-day summit that was laying the groundwork for the U.N. climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

According to the final communique, the Group of 20 leaders also agreed to end public financing for coal-fired power generation abroad, but set no target for phasing out coal domestically — a clear nod to top carbon polluters China and India.

The Group of 20 countries, which represent more than three-quarters of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, had been looking for common ground and solid commitments on how to reduce emissions while helping poor countries deal with the impact of rising temperatures.

Without them, momentum could be lost for the larger annual talks in Glasgow that officially opened Sunday and where countries from around the globe will be represented, including poor ones most vulnerable to rising seas, desertification and other effects.

Leaders made fundamentally impotent by greed diseased, corporate overlords.

If our planet’s grassroots don’t find a way to respond successfully to Climate Catastrophe, then the near future for our children and grandchildren will be adapt, adapt, adapt as fast as you can.

There will be little or no real leadership or help from the top down.

2. The G20 need to agree to a global minimum gas & diesel tax of $2 a gallon

Just like the global corporate minimum tax. This would bring us in line with Europe and be the most effective method to getting people to drive EV and abandon fossil fuels

3. You'll still have to make electricity to charge those vehicles.

The only true way to get where we want to be is to make nuclear power a major part of our power generation. Until that happens, this will all be a smoke & mirrors illusion. And if you want Pres Biden to make $5 a gallon gasoline the norm HERE, then prepare for the return of GOP controlled government.

8. True, though a carbon tax is still a tool that has its use

We could start with something low, such as $10/ton carbon. That would cost about $7.50 per ton of bituminous coal (75% carbon), $1.30 per barrel of oil (85% carbon) and $0.19 per 1000 cubic feet of natural gas (75% carbon).

If the price is raised by $10/ton per year, after ten years the prices would be $75 per ton of bituminous coal, $13/bbl of oil and $1.90 per 1000 cubic feet of natural gas. That would add roughly $33/MW-hr to the cost of coal fired electricity, $13/MW-hr to the cost of gas fired electricity, and about $0.31 to the cost of a gallon of gasoline/diesel. This would probably outright kill coal and delegate natural gas to a backup electrical source.

of products that were produced using coal fired electricity. I bet that would spark innovation. Give like 2-5 years notice so there is time to adjust. We have done this for human rights, why not habitibilty rights?

Justice matters.
