Suspect's parents did not flee and are returning soon, their attorneys say

Source: CNN

Two attorneys working with Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of the Michigan school shooting suspect, say the couple left town on the night of the shooting “for their own safety” and are not fleeing.

. . .

"On Thursday night we contacted the Oakland County prosecutor to discuss this matter and to advise her that James and Jennifer Crumbley would be turning themselves in to be arraigned. Instead of communicating with us, the prosecutor held a press conference to announce charges," attorneys Shannon Smith and Mariell Lehman said in a statement.

I wanted to throw in a sarcasm tag, but...well...that's really why the judge appeared to okay it.

But then, there's this:

Aaron Persky was ousted as a judge by voters over his sentencing of Brock Turner, who assaulted an unconscious woman at Stanford University in 2015. Only one day after defending his hiring, officials said he had been fired from the high school in San Jose. His 2018 sacking was the first recall of a California judge since 1932.

In a statement on Tuesday, Fremont Union High School District said that Mr Persky had applied to coach junior varsity girls' tennis over the summer, and was hired after completing a background check that included a fingerprint scan.

"He was a qualified applicant for the position, having attended several tennis coaching clinics for youth and holds a high rating from the United States Tennis Association," the statement said.

That day Change.org launched a petition calling for Mr Persky to lose his new job and accused school officials of "explicitly and ignorantly allowing rape culture to ensue". But on Wednesday, the district announced that his employment at Lynbrook High School in San Jose "has ended".

The man accused of careening his SUV into a Wisconsin parade, killing six people and injuring more than 60 others, was a registered sex offender in Nevada and had an active arrest warrant in that state, court records show.

He was also released on bond this month after allegedly running over a woman who said she's the mother of his child earlier this month, according to court documents.

Some are wondering why Brooks was released on $1,000 bond after allegedly running over a woman on November 2 -- an amount the district attorney's office now calls "inappropriately low.

It's a little weird that the sheriff said about 2 hours ago that their attorney could not get the parents to call her back and now the attys have released a statement that they will turn themselves in. Since the charges were announced hours ago, why did it take this long for them to communicate with their attorneys that they are returning? I think now they are afraid of being picked up by the FBI, etc.

Dec 2021

This is the latest from CNN:

The Crumbleys are not yet in custody and considered fugitives, according to Oakland County undersheriff Michael McCabe.

The undersheriff is confident the couple will be found and it’s a “matter of when.”

Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of the Michigan high school shooting suspect, were scheduled to be arraigned at 4 p.m. ET today.

Earlier today, court administrator Amy Luce said that if they were not in court by 4:30 p.m. ET, there would be no arraignment today. If the Crumbley’s are taken into custody tomorrow, there could be an arraignment from Oakland County jail, as there will be no one at the courthouse tomorrow, according to Luce.

Sat Dec 4, 2021, 01:58 PM
Dec 2021

James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of the teenager accused of killing four people in a Michigan high school shooting, pleaded not guilty to charges against them.

The couple was arraigned in court Saturday morning on four counts each of involuntary manslaughter. A judge set their bonds at $500,000 each, saying there is some concern about them being a flight risk because they had to be apprehended.

The couple’s attorneys had asked for a bond of $50,000 or $100,000 and denied that James and Jennifer Crumbley fled.

Jennifer Crumbley cried as she told the judge that she understands the charges against her. She and her husband both appeared virtually for the arraignment.
