California redwood forest returned to native tribal group

Source: Associated Press/By Brian Melley

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The descendants of Native American tribes on the Northern California coast are reclaiming a bit of their heritage that includes ancient redwoods that have stood since their ancestors walked the land.

Save the Redwoods League planned to announce Tuesday that it is transferring more than 500 acres (202 hectares) on the Lost Coast to the InterTribal Sinkyone Wilderness Council.

The group of 10 tribes that have inhabited the area for thousands of years will be responsible for protecting the land dubbed Tc’ih-Léh-Dûñ, or “Fish Run Place,” in the Sinkyone language.

(snip)

The transfer marks a step in the growing Land Back movement to return Indigenous homelands to the descendants of those who lived there for millennia before European settlers arrived.

Our redwoods are precious to us! We are responsible for seeing that they continue to live and thrive on the lands where they first were planted.

I am very proud of Save the Redwood League for their forward-looking policies.

It's about saving a rare natural resource that's beyond precious, just by its very being.

Many of these newcomers are fire refugees and climate refugees.

The area has few shops and restaurants, etc.

These newcomers to the region want to tear it all down and build build build. Many are very pissed because the housing for them (and others) is simply not there.

Oh well ...

Non-native Americans (California Peggy excepted) can't be trusted to take care of these gems.

Remember the book about Luna, the girl who sat in the redwood for almost two years to save it? I loved that book.

We think of them as being there forever but man occupied California long before the climate warmed enough to allow such forests.

Has some hiking trails along a very rugged coastline. Not for the weak or faint of heart.
