Senate confirms Jackson as first Black woman on Supreme Court

Source: Washington Post

The Senate voted Thursday to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, felling one of the most significant remaining racial barriers in American government and sending the first Democratic nominee to the high court in 12 years. Jackson, a daughter of schoolteachers who has risen steadily through America's elite legal ranks, will become the first Black woman to sit on the court and only the eighth who is not a White man.

She will replace Associate Justice Stephen G. Breyer after the Supreme Court's term ends in late June or early July. Thursday's 53-47 vote represents the culmination of a six-week whirlwind confirmation process for the 51-year-old federal appeals judge.

It began in February with President Biden introducing Jackson as a distinguished nominee who would "help write the next chapter in the history of the journey of America" and reached a climax during two days of tense Senate hearings last month where Republicans sought to paint her as a left-wing radical who had cosseted criminals and terrorists, only for three GOP senators to ultimately reject those claims and support her confirmation.

Underscoring the partisan tensions, Jackson's confirmation came only after the Senate Judiciary Committee deadlocked on her nomination along party lines and Republicans forced three procedural votes on the Senate floor this week. But Democrats said Thursday that her confirmation should a cause for national reflection and jubilation."This milestone should have happened generations ago -- generations ago -- but we are always trotting on a path towards a more perfect union," Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said. "America today is taking a giant step towards making our union more perfect."

Hold on to your chair - here is what they wrote -

Senate confirms Barrett to Supreme Court, cementing its conservative majority

By Seung Min Kim
October 26, 2020

A bitterly divided Senate confirmed Amy Coney Barrett as the 115th justice to the Supreme Court on Monday, elevating just the fifth woman to the court in its 231-year history and one who further cements its conservative shift — a legacy that will last even if Republicans lose power in next week’s elections. The vote was 52 to 48 for Barrett, President Trump’s third nominee to the Supreme Court. The 48-year-old jurist solidifies a judicial legacy for the White House and Senate Republicans that also includes dozens of younger and more ideologically conservative judges on the federal appeals courts.

An acolyte of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, Barrett is certain to diverge dramatically from the woman she succeeds: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Sept. 18 and was for decades an enduring icon for liberals. The battle to confirm Barrett — whose installation occurred as more than 60 million people had already cast their ballots for president — also plunged a Senate already bruised by years of tit-for-tat skirmishes in the judicial wars into deeper partisan acrimony.

Incensed Democrats charged Republicans with hypocrisy for blocking President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee for eight months in 2016 and repeatedly pointed out that no justice has been confirmed this close to a presidential election. “The American people will never forget this blatant act of bad faith. They will never forget your complete disregard for their voices, for the people standing in line right now voting their choice, not your choice,” Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said shortly before the vote.

But Republicans asserted their raw power, muscling Barrett’s nomination through in just over four weeks and with no bipartisan support — the first time that has occurred for a Supreme Court nominee in generations and a reflection of the politicized atmosphere around judicial fights.

it is expected. Right down to the douchebag fucking scum spawn of Ron Paul who held up the final vote for about 15 minutes, as the last one to cast his.

The one take-away from that article is that Barrett's vote was completely partisan - NO Democrat voted for her. Brown-Jackson's vote at least had 3 GOP votes.

She was a hastily brought forward candidate to replace RBG...one of the best SC judges of our time.
The Democrats felt she shouldn't have been voted on, given the lack of credentials, and the horrible timing. Not to mention previous statements by Senator McConnell regarding timing on SCOTUS votes.
Neither was the case with Brown-Jackson, and even then she only got 3 votes from the Republican side.
There simply was no credible excuse for the Republicans saying no.

That some of those slave owners that abused people for fun and profit had a moment of clarity. And they knew that one day the people called slaves would be a very important part of American justice and leadership. And they were afraid.

May our future put fear in the hearts of bigots and abusers everywhere.

Just this week, Judge Luttig—considered a luminary in conservative legal circles and Sen. Ted Cruz’s former boss—reaffirmed his support for Judge Jackson, calling out the empty statements of the Texas Senator.

I would not hesitate to retract my endorsement of Judge Jackson for the Supreme Court if there were anything at all to Senator Cruz's statement, but there is not. In fact, quite the opposite is the case.
