Gov. issues state of emergency (Washington State)
Gov. Chris Gregoire this morning declared a state of emergency due to the weather.
In a release, the governor's office said this would "ensure the delivery of valuable dairy products across Washington state" by waiving hours of service for drivers of trucks hauling milk shipments, enabling the activation of the Washington National Guard and freeing up state agencies "to take extraordinary steps to help local jurisdictions during the current winter storm."

(15,888 posts)The Gov. seems to be out to protect our milk. Read the proclamation in this article. It's all about saving milk production. This gets the National Guard activated? I think that 200,000 home without electricity and the storm still has about an hour before its over should be the news. But if it's milk that gets the emergency declared, then so be it!
On edit, guess what?! The ice storm warning has been extended two more hours! We're getting this crap until 2:00pm pst!

(15,888 posts)First snow, now ice.
Freezing rain that fell overnight and continues to fall has left a slick, dangerous coat of ice on local roads, causing blackouts, collisions, a temporary grounding of flights at Sea-Tac, and a state of emergency declared by Gov. Chris Gregoire.
An ice-coated tree fell on an Issaquah man and killed him Thursday morning, KOMO/4 reports.
Freezing rain will likely fall into the afternoon from Seattle to Olympia.
The governor's proclamation included a waiver of a federal 12-hour shift rule for truck drivers, to help the state's milk industry, which risked losing $1 million a day if it couldn't move its product. The state of emergency also allows Gregoire to activate the National Guard, in case it's needed.
