Uvalde schools police chief resigns from city council

Source: NPR

UVALDE, Texas — The Uvalde school district's police chief has stepped down from his position in the City Council just weeks after being sworn in following allegations that he erred in his response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

Chief Pete Arredondo told the Uvalde Leader-News on Friday that has decided to step down for the good of the city administration. He was elected to the District 3 council position on May 7 and was sworn in — in a closed-door ceremony — on May 31, just a week after the massacre.

"After much consideration, I regret to inform those who voted for me that I have decided to step down as a member of the city council for District 3. The mayor, the city council, and the city staff must continue to move forward without distractions. I feel this is the best decision for Uvalde," Arredondo said.

Arredondo, who has been on administrative leave from the school district since June 22, has declined repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press. His attorney, George Hyde, did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment Saturday.

That's a mess and I'm still surprised he went ahead and assumed he would be fine in that City Council position.

Resign as police chief.

Apologize to the town and to the families whose family members died. But before you do that publicly, contact every family whose family members died and ask to see them and apologize in person. Consequences be damned. You can never undo what you happened, and you can't now do what you failed to do previously. And you're liability is probably limited. You're already known as a coward. Or an inept police chief. Or any number of things. But you can do the right thing now and demonstrate that you are at least still a human being and maybe take steps to atone for your failures.

How could he be both the chief of police and a member of the city council?
That's totally ridiculous.
At least now he is no longer on the city council. Now he needs to resign one more time.

If he was a county sheriff, an elected position he could not hold two elected positions.

But as an appointed city police chief there were no restrictions in that regard.

Personally, I don't think any government employee should hold any elected position within the same government system.

He is a shithead and no one should hire him for anything involving police and decision making.
