6.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Mexico, 1 dead

Source: ABC News/AP

MEXICO CITY -- A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 struck Mexico early Thursday, causing buildings to sway and leaving at least one person dead in the nation's capital. The earthquake struck shortly after 1 a.m., just three days after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook western and central Mexico, killing two.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday’s earthquake, like Monday’s, was centered in the western state of Michoacan near the Pacific coast. The epicenter was about 29 miles (46 kilometers) south-southwest of Aguililla, Michoacan, at a depth of about 15 miles (24.1 kilometers).

Michoacan’s state government said the quake was felt throughout the state. It reported damage to a building in the city of Uruapan and some landslides on the highway that connects Michoacan and Guerrero with the coast.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said via Twitter that it was an aftershock from Monday’s quake and was also felt in the states of Colima, Jalisco and Guerrero.

2. Yeah when you have big quakes

you'll usually get a swarm of smaller ones but often a couple "big" ones too.

4. Huge! Or...uge! It shows the telepathic powers of declassifacation when mad (no pun intended).

See - Quake starts with Q. The great one is mad that everyone is being unfair and mean to him. Therefore, when the fear of unleashing his mayonnaise militia on the mean people didn't make the meanness stop, he had to unleash the Quacken. But why Mexico you ask? Mexico has six letters...Hillary has six letters... uh, wait...it has six letters if you send the "H" to hell where "Quakes" come from. Now they will build and pay for the wall! Wall and hell both have five letters...

Coffee is ready!

5. That's because the original earthquake was so large

and the Richter scale is logarithmic, where each whole number digit up is 10 times more powerful. So that initial big one can still produce a smaller "big" one.

Depending on what was going on to cause that initial one and the "settling" afterwards, there could be some more "big" (moderate - strong) ones to come.

Before the USGS updated their website, they used to display all the aftershocks around a main quake over time. Now it seems they just show each target one (unless they have a link somewhere to overlay all the aftershocks around a location and I can't find it}.

7. please note : aftershocks . earthquakes after the main quake .

can go on for hours , days , years . can be as big as the main quake but diminish in size over 48 hours .

8. Sept 19 etc, needs to be a travel to the US day or the Yucatan or something.

The capital was hit by a quake on Monday, on the same day that it was struck by the deadly 1985 and 2017 disasters. Experts say the likelihood of this happening is between 0.000751% and 0.00000024%..yeah...it has been determined that Sept 19th is cursed, but do we need to curse Sept 22nd too?

Now it looks like western Mexico has an "earthquake season" which is extending to the 22nd

Sep 19,1985 10,000 killed
Sep 19, 2017 a big quake
Sept 19, 2022 - another big quake
