Chinese state media claims U.S. NSA infiltrated country's telecommunications networks

Source: CNBC

A U.S. intelligence agency gained access to China’s telecommunications network after hacking a university, Chinese state media claimed Thursday. The U.S. National Security Agency used phishing — a hacking technique where a malicious link is included in an email — to gain access to the government funded Northwestern Polytechnical University, the Global Times alleged, citing an unnamed source.

American hackers stole “core technology data including key network equipment configuration, network management data, and core operational data,” and other files, according to the Global Times. As part of the NSA’s hack, the agency infiltrated Chinese telecommunications operators so that the U.S. could “control the country’s infrastructure,” the Global Times alleged.

The NSA was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC. The hack has not been verified by CNBC. The Global Times, citing its unnamed source, reported that more details about the attack on Northwestern Polytechnical University will be released soon.

9. I bet they used backdoors in Huawei's networking equipment that China claimed didn't exist...

This is basically China just confirming that the NSA isn't incompetent.

China sold telecommunications equipment to US companies at cost all over the Midwest to spy on military movements and now wants to cry when the shoe is on the other foot

The only issue I see here is that China found out, did trump sold one of the documents already?

12. I would not be t all surprised if this turned out to be true. It would be self-defense given

China's efforts to infiltrate and damage the US communication system. This is a warning to China that further hacking of US government of corporations will have serious repercussions.

13. China is far better at stealing tech to build things like their "new" stealth fighter yet

all the NSA apparently can do is hack a University? May the NSA should consider asking China if they could send some NSA personal to China for training since China is clearly the professional at it.

We've had that stuff down at Area 51 for decades now.

15. Some here put stock in what the Chinese say about the NSA. Really?

You believe the Chinese Communist propagandists? You think the Chinese are better at technology than we are? Then why did they have to recruit spies from LANL? Why are they trying to do things (they have not accomplished yet) that we did 50 years ago? The Chinese are good at copying us, sure, but original ideas? I think we win that category.

Don't be duped by Chinese propaganda.

16. You forgot that they had to steal the tech to build their own stealth fighter. That aside they are

not idiots and they can accomplish great things on their own when they put their minds to it.
Take the Great Wall.
That is a major accomplishment on their part,,,,,,,,,,not really successful at stopping invasions but still a major accomplishment.
Plus they have gone from a minor power and become a major world one in only a few decades.
Granted, they managed alot of it by stealing tech from other nations they still have risen rather far compared to where they started off a hundred years ago.

21. Isn't that kind of the smart thing to do, though?

Particularly if the biggest and most juiciest targets don't do much to stop or punish such thefts? I mean, if I was in charge of China I would be doing the same thing. A lot of the technology was just handed to them by our governments and corporations. They didn't even have to steal it. Like you said, they managed to advance greatly in a rapid amount of time by having stuff handed to them, or by simply taking it.

If it works...

22. Smart? Depends. It can certainly help you advance fast but doing so does come with potential

consequences that can last for a very long time.
Take slavery in the US a few hundred years ago. While it supposedly was the smart thing to do in order to fill the need for workers it came with both long term and short term conquences one of which was the American Civil War.

23. That's the thing, though. What consequences have they faced?

While it does seem like things are changing in regards to that, I don't think anyone can deny they had a good run at doing it mostly consequence free.

25. "What consequences have they faced?" None at this moment but that could and probably will change

and when that might be is anyones guess.
The real question though that is not as of yet answered and it cannot be until it happens is what form will it take?

20. There are plenty of books written by former US spy folks

In which they discuss this stuff and also discuss the thinking that goes behind how much info they do and don't release to the public. This is the stuff the NSA is supposed to do(as opposed to sneakily finding legal loop holes to spy on US citizens)

19. I don't doubt this at all, as that is their job...

Much like it's job of Chinese spies and hackers to do the same. That's the world we live in until aliens attack us and we all unite. It's also why I don't think we should get mad when china does stuff, we just need to get better.

24. There is only one reason not to spy on all other countries

And if I can figure out the answer, I will let you know. I am sure the US and Canada spy on each other.
