DirecTV reaches deal to distribute right wing network Newsmax after long dispute
Source: CNBC
DirecTV said Wednesday it reached a deal with Newsmax Media to once again carry the right wing network in its satellite-TV and streaming packages. DirecTV had not carried Newsmax on its services since late January, when carriage negotiations broke down between the two companies.
Newsmax had earlier alleged at the core of the dispute was political discrimination, with some politicians getting involved along the way, while DirecTV said it came down to economic differences. Newsmax will return to DirecTVs packages at no additional cost. Financial terms of the deal werent disclosed.
The TV network, run by CEO Christopher Ruddy, had been pushing to receive fees. Initially, DirecTV carried the network without paying fees and Newsmax relied on advertising revenue, which is typically the case for new TV channels. Newsmax recognizes and appreciates that DirecTV clearly supports diverse voices, including conservative ones, Ruddy said in a statement, adding DirecTV helped give Newsmax its start nearly a decade ago.
Throughout the public dispute, DirecTV said such blackouts were a common occurrence in the pay-TV industry, and consumers were often caught in the middle. This resolution with Newsmax, resolving an all-too-common carriage dispute, underscores our dedication to delivering a wide array of programming and perspectives to our customers, Bill Morrow, CEO of DirecTV, said in a statement.

WASHINGTON Dominion Voting Systems on Tuesday filed defamation suits against One America News Network, Herring Networks Newsmax Media and the founder and former CEO of Overstock.com over claims by the defendants that the company rigged the 2020 U.S. election for President Joe Biden.
Also named in the complaint are OAN personalities Chanel Rion and Christina Bobb, and Herring Networks owners Robert Herring and Charles Herring. OAN didnt immediately respond to a request for comment.
Former President Donald Trump refused to accept the 2020 presidential election results and instead backed dozens of failed lawsuits and continued to spread baseless claims of voter fraud. OAN and Newsmax are pro-Trump news organizations. The trio of complaints details that OAN, Newsmax and former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne knowingly and continuously sold the false story of election fraud in the 2020 presidential election, with Dominion cast as the villain.
Newsmax and OAN both endorsed, repeated, broadcast, and amplified a series of verifiably false lies about Dominion to serve their own commercial purposes, wrote Dominion lawyer Stephen Shackelford, a partner at Susman Godfrey LLP.

Smartmatic Corp. filed a fresh round of defamation suits over false claims that the voting-machine maker rigged the 2020 presidential election, this time against Newsmax Media Inc. and One America News Network.
Newsmax and OAN owner Herring Networks Inc. knew they were spreading lies by reporting that Smartmatic fraudulently flipped millions of votes away from then-president Donald Trump, according to suits filed on Wednesday in Washington and Delaware.
Smartmatic became collateral damage as these companies sought to build audience and profit at all costs, Chief Executive Officer Antonio Mugica said in a statement.
London-based Smartmatic, whose technology is used in elections from the Philippines to Estonia, filed an earlier suit against Fox News and its top on-air talent, as well as Rudy Giuliani, one of Trumps main lawyers in the fight to overturn the election results, and former Trump campaign attorney Sidney Powell, who appeared on the network.

And a judge ordered that Dominion's $1.6 billion suit against them would go forward and similarly that Smartmatic's suit would also go forward.
They had earlier settled a case brought by a Dominion employee for a non-disclosed amount.

The Fox case gets more press but these others are still ongoing.
