Kentucky governor vetoes sweeping GOP transgender measure

Source: AP

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky's Democratic governor issued an election-year veto Friday of a sweeping Republican bill aimed at regulating the lives of transgender youths that includes banning access to gender-affirming health care and restricting the bathrooms they can use.

The bill also bans discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools and allows teachers to refuse to refer to transgender students by the pronouns they use. It easily passed the GOP-dominated legislature with veto-proof margins, and lawmakers will reconvene next week for the final two days of this year's session, when they could vote to override the veto.

Gov. Andy Beshear said in a written veto message that the bill allows “too much government interference in personal healthcare issues and rips away the freedom of parents to make medical decisions for their children.”

In his one-page message, he warned that the bill's repercussions would include an increase in youth suicides. The governor said, “My faith teaches me that all children are children of God and Senate Bill 150 will endanger the children of Kentucky.”

This bill was just pure cruelty disguised, as usual, as a measure to protect poor, defenseless children.

A veto override is certainly possible & even likely, but I commend and thank him for doing the right thing, even though it bucked the party platform.

State Senate 30 GOP : 7 DEM
State House 80 GOP : 20 Dem

"A simple majority of members in both chambers must vote to override a veto, which is 51 of the 100 members in the Kentucky House of Representatives and 20 of the 38 members in the Kentucky State Senate. Kentucky is one of six states that requires a majority vote from both of its legislative chambers to override a veto."

are fundamentally and systematically reducing all sexual and reproductive activity to sex between 1 man, 1 woman, missionary, only for reproductive goals. Of course, since it is white elitist males coming up with the laws limiting sexual orientation, and reproductive rights, there will be exceptions that benefit their personal penis power.

Not a single human on the planet has the right to deny any other human the freedom to be who they are or what they use their body for. Forced birth is slavery. Forced compliance of gender identity is slavery. Laws are meant to protect us from harm, not to deny us our personhood. Always remember, the people who want these laws want power. They are control freaks who have abused their positions of trust and perverted the rule of law.

Thank you, Governor Beshear, for stopping the attempt to continue oppression and enslavement of human beings. Let us elect people who will codify the rights of gender identity and reproductive rights. The people using relgion to gain control over others need to be stopped, and organized religion needs to get out of politics. Period.

Not out of the realm of possibility that Breshears may get to appoint a replacement should he become unable to serve due to health problems. He just got out of the hospital. 81 is living on borrowed time.
