Jewish paper's column catches Secret Service eye
The U.S. Secret Service is looking into a controversial column by an Atlanta Jewish newspaper publisher that mulled the assassination of an American president.
Andrew Adler, owner and publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times, wrote a January 13 column about the threat of Iran to Israel. He posed three options for the Jewish state to counter the Iranian regime.
One of them called for a "hit on a president in order to preserve Israel's existence."
"Give the go-ahead for U.S. based Mossad agents to take out a president deemed unfriendly to Israel in order for the current vice president to take his place and forcefully dictate that the United States' policy includes its helping the Jewish state obliterate its enemies."

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Once upon a time, it meant recognizing the right of Israel to exist and protecting its people. I was cool with that.
Now, however, it means helping Israel "obliterate its enemies," even if that means assassinating an American President to enshrine a sufficiently pro-preemptive-war, pro-Israel chief executive?
I recognize that the situation is extremely complex and I tend to stay out of those discussions, but in this case...

(3,991 posts)There was one not too long ago to a video, in which a couple of analysts posited (or rather implied) that the cancellation of the joint US Israel exercises:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/15/us-israel-usa-exercise-idUSTRE80E0Q220120115
was caused because US blamed Israel for assassination of of Iran nuke scientist and feared possible "Iran attack" on exercises to draw both to war. It was an example of this sub-narrative that Obama admin is deeply distrustful of Israel, who must do anything to stop the Iranian nuke. Very possible this guy subscribed to that narrative.

Funny thing about that. They like to declare war on ideas and other non living things. Just like corporations being people, the Repubs are a little confused about these concepts.

(10,745 posts)I do hope the Secret Service paid this dumbass a visit.....although, sadly, some of the mainstream far-righters might actually back him up on this. And even worse, if he ends up being turned loose, the neo-Nazis and other anti-Semites will try to twist this into a "global Jewish conspiracy" yarn and propaganda piece.....after all, some fascists are the masters of deceit.
Behind the Aegis
(53,939 posts)This will play well with the anti-Israel crowd and the anti-Semites of the left, who still try to sell almost as many conspiracy theories about us as the right does. It is no different than when a woman files a flase rape report; suddenly all rapes are false or greatly suspicious. On a grander scale, a handful of Muslim extremists fly planes into buildings, blow up trains, and buses, and suddenly, all Muslims are "terrorists and Islamists."
There is a reason bigotry, prejudice, and stereotypes prevail, even in so-called educated societies, because, unless the group is miniscule, there is almost always someone in the target group who "is" the stereotype!

(249 posts)Look up Irgun and the Stern Gang. Two terrorist Jewish organizations that were an integral part of the establishing of Israel.
Menachem Begin was the head of Irgun.
From Encycopedia Brittanica online
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/565756/Stern-Gang
"Later the Stern Gang attacked airfields, railway yards, and other strategic installations in Palestine, usually with success, though at heavy loss in members killed or captured. After the creation of the state of Israel (1948), the group, which had always been condemned by moderate leaders of the Jewish community in Palestine, was suppressed, some of its units being incorporated in the Israeli defense forces. Unlike the Irgun Zvai Leumi, a precursor of the Ḥerut (Freedom) Party, the Stern Gang left no political party to carry on its political programs."
Terrorism isn't some hidden facet of the Israeli state, its part of the policies of the state. The current Likud party has roots in the Irgun.
I wonder when the "that person is anti-Semitic" police on this thread will get to my post. Misusing an important phrase like that reduces its impact greatly. Soon the phrase "anti-Semitic" will be synonymous with the phrase "crying wolf" it's well on its way there now IMO).
This has likely been published to show Obama that Israel is not going to back down in any disagreement with the US.
Liberals and Progressives in Israel must be terrified by what is happening to their country under the far right and even farther right.
Its a tragedy, not just for Israel but for the planet.

I'm glad reaction to this exercise in delusional myopia has been overwhelmingly bad, and frankly Atlanta's Jewish community (and advertisers to them) might want to open up a new community paper. One whose publisher hasn't publicly revealed himself to be an extremist loon that they probably don't want to be associated with.

Published: 01.24.12, 07:11 / Israel News
The owner and publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times Andrew Adler announced his resignation following an editorial piece he wrote in which he suggests that Israel consider assassinating US President Barack Obama in order to prevent Iran from attacking Israel.
The article sparked outrage within the Jewish community in the US. Adler later published an apology in which he regretted ever writing the piece.
