Democratic Congressional Campaign Manager's Family Pet (Cat) Killed, Painted With "Liberal"

RUSSELLVILLE—On the heels of a weekend of positive news coverage for the campaign of Democratic Congressional candidate Ken Aden, Aden’s campaign manager returned home to find his family pet slaughtered, with the word “liberal” painted on the animal’s corpse.

The Russellville Police Department is investigating, and a report will be made to the Federal Bureau of Investigation Monday morning.

Jacob Burris, who has served as Aden’s campaign manager since late October, arrived home with his family Sunday evening, and his four children discovered the gruesome scene as they exited the family vehicle to enter their home.

The family pet, an adult, mixed-breed Siamese cat, had one side of its head bashed in to the point the cat’s eyeball was barely hanging from its socket. The perpetrators scrawled “liberal” across the cat’s body and left it on the doorstep of Burris’ house.

Act 33, the animal cruelty law, makes torturing a dog, cat or horse a felony on first offense in Arkansas, punishable by up to six years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. The legislation also includes a five-year sentencing enhancement for anyone convicted of torturing an animal in the presence of a child.

is asking the question: how many states that have these laws actually ever insist on felony convictions or jail time for what are regularly excruciating examples of cruelty?

What I'd like to see is what percentage of abuse cases actually end up in felony convictions.

The courts need to take the laws that exist seriously, the laws need to be serious, there need to be enough laws and levels of punishment that at some point someone will plead down to a 3-4 year prison term.

It makes me very, very angry.

It's shocking to me that there haven't been more (if any) reverse murders by people who knew the legal system wouldn't take them seriously. Like I said, I know one way that number could reach one.

The therapy that poor child is going to have to go through to resolve that in their minds is what breaks my heart. Whoever did this, did it with the very purpose of that man's children finding the dead cat--and that is terrorism aimed at a child, which should never be condoned, congratulated or seen as acceptable.

All children should be off-limits when it comes to politics.

I would not eat a dog* but many people do, and many won't eat a cow, which I do regularly but there really isn't any logical reason to differentiate between our positions, it has to do with religion, queasiness, or just the ever-present "ick factor". Anyone who thinks there is something inherently 'wrong' with eating other animals has to be willing to suspend or ignore a few million years of evolution that make it one hundred percent natural.

ETA, unless I was VERY hungry...like on the verge of starvation. Just to clarify.

One crime is the actual act of violence or destruction.

The second crime is that of intimidation against whatever targeted group the victim is a member of, in this case, people with liberal political views.

Two crimes in one. That's why I agree that hate crimes are deserving of additional penalties.

We live in a violent gun culture that glorifies the death of our enemies. I think this sort of behavior is not as much of an extreme outlier to consider psychopathology. This is almost milder than what historically the bigoted Southern contingency has accomplished e.g. lynching. I am really not surprised this doesn't happen more often considering the Fox Noise propaganda machine continues to spit out reactionary garbage that incites violence, our gun culture and the failure that is the war on drugs. Gabby Giffords and George Tiller have recently fallen victim to our country's violent disposition. I do share the sentiment that this world is filled with terrible people, but I believe this is the norm, not the extreme.

Conduct disorder in children is considered a precursor of psychopathy/Antisocial Personality Disorder in adults. Here is one set of diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder (this is only a partial set -- you can read more about it at this link):

A. A repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated, as manifested by the presence of three (or more) of the following criteria in the past 12 months, with at least one criterion present in the past 6 months:

Aggression to people and animals

(1) often bullies, threatens, or intimidates others
(2) often initiates physical fights
(3) has used a weapon that can cause serious physical harm to others (e.g., abat, brick, broken bottle, knife, gun)
(4) has been physically cruel to people
(5) has been physically cruel to animals
(6) has stolen while confronting a victim (e.g., mugging, purse snatching, extortion, armed robbery)
(7) has forced someone into sexual activity

Here's a study that goes into some detail about Animal Cruelty & Psychiatric Disorders. (It's in PDF format.)

Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a dangerous psychopathy that does not confine itself to animal abuse. "Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives," wrote humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer. And according to Robert K. Ressler, who developed profiles of serial killers for the FBI, "Murderers … very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids."

Animal abuse is not just the result of a minor personality flaw in the abuser—it is a symptom of a deep mental disturbance. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty toward animals rarely stop there; many of them move on to their fellow humans.

The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appear in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers. The standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders.

A study conducted by Northeastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA found that people who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against humans. The majority of inmates who are scheduled to be executed for murder at California's San Quentin penitentiary "practiced" their crimes on animals, according to the warden.

There’s no doubting this was political. There’s no doubting it’s another hideous example of right wing terrorism. Personally I would hope that leaders on the right-Steve Womack, the Arkansas Republican Party, etc.-would step up and condemn this as strongly as possible. I would also hope that Steve Womack’s father, owner of a local radio station, would stop giving out the names, phone numbers, and addresses of members of the Aden team or anyone else for that matter on his radio program when ranting about Aden. The elder Womack has done that several times and Aden’s former press secretary got a death threat in the mail soon after her name was mentioned on the program. Clearly there is someone out there that doesn’t need anymore of that kind of information, much less inspiration to act on their hatred. I also hope that the Aden campaign will do whatever they can to up the security at some of their events, for the time being at least. Aden has said he’s going to put out a press release on the matter soon, and we’ll be following this and any developments related to it closely.

The campaign manager for an Arkansas House Democratic candidate found his cat slaughtered with the word "liberal" painted on its corpse.

Ken Aden's congressional campaign said Monday that Jacob Burris arrived home Sunday evening with his family to discover the gruesome scene and that local police are investigating.

"To kill a child's pet is just unconscionable. As a former combat soldier, I've seen the best of humanity and the worst of humanity. Whoever did this is definitely part of the worst of humanity," Aden said in a release, pointing the finger at a "rogue individual or group" not associated with his opponent.

The correlation between violent offenders and animal abuse is high as well.

The FBI should, I think, and perhaps will give a little extra attention to this, since it wouldn't be a bad bet to think a serious human injury or death is in this perpetrators future, and not necessarily this target.

It may go well beyond the outrage at what was done to the cat. Anyone in this person's orbit is at risk.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is one of their near neighbors.

Mon Jan 23, 2012, 05:00 PM
Jan 2012

I'm not sure if you are aware of how "true threat" doctrine works now - and how hard it is to get someone on these grounds.

The laws - in almost all places - are not set up to view this as more than the destruction of someone's treasured armoire. In fact, that would probably receive a higher value in court.

A law has clearly been broken, so there's that, but first, we have to see how seriously the police look into finding the perpetrator.

Even if they find the perpetrator(s), they've got a law being broken, they have some form of trespass, the intent to intimidate can be worked into the torts that exist as a means to argue for higher damages, but taken in all in all, my belief that anything close to resembling "justice" will be done here is *very* low.

The legal system and the courts are way out of step with how we feel about our animals. Even sympathetic judges find themselves handcuffed by weak or nonexistent law.

And when you get an imbalance like this, to not go crazy, you have to tell yourself that this is one place where you are not waiting. I'm sorry, but I'm not. Keep in mind that when I say "worse than they can imagine," I am *very* creative.

And the Supremes decided to overturn a federal ban on these videos.

"The videos virtually disappeared once the measure became law, the government argued. The Bush administration used the law for the first time when it indicted Stevens in 2004.

All 50 states have laws against animal cruelty, but the federal statute targeted the videos because it has been difficult to prosecute people who take part in violence against animals with a camera rolling, but not showing their faces."

This act of cruelty and hideous disregard for the pain of that man's children is thoroughly disgusting. Those kids - and I don't care if they are all college aged or small children - did NOTHING to deserve this kind of treatment in the "greatest country on Earth" (tm).

A family pet is part of the family PERIOD...younger children may be more terrorized by this behavior, but even adult children who have left the house would be impacted. I cannot even express the rage I would feel if my children and my wife and I returned home to find our dog or cat slaughtered and defaced on our front porch.

I can tell you this much though, I would have some serious looking investigators hired and making ALL inquiries in the neighborhood if you catch my drift...Don Corleone would not need to ask me for a favor, it would be on full offer for the identity and prosecution of the perpetrator.

Or how cruel they can be with no conscience.

If someone would do that to a family pet, then they are just a short ways away from doing it to a human being.

Cruelty to an animal.

Cruelty to children who see the aftermath.

Act of terrorism against those whom one disagrees with politically.

As I remember it started with his saying that Dukakis was the "L" word, (as though it were something too dirty to say) and a card carrying member of the ACLU.

Honestly, that's where I remember it starting. And thus, he imported Cold War propaganda into domestic presidential politics. He implied that liberals were enemies of the state, equivalent to communists.

What makes you think that this sicko hasn't already "worked" with people?

They did this to a family pet, on the pets property, in a neighborhood they may not have been familiar (although it could very well be a neighbor), but the location indicates a comfort level which indicates a familiarity of action.

My guess is that they have done this before enough that they are comfortable with it. Very comfortable. Which makes me wonder if they haven't already proceeded to hurt people.

The family pet, an adult, mixed-breed Siamese cat, had one side of its head bashed in to the point the cat’s eyeball was barely hanging from its socket. The perpetrators scrawled “liberal” across the cat’s body and left it on the doorstep of Burris’ house.

I can't imagine the effect of this on them for some time to come. Aside from the horror of what they had to witness, will they have to live in fear that they are in danger of violence as well?

I don't remember politics ever being this openly nasty before in my lifetime. Yes, I believe in the Texas Bush +CIA pals taking out both Jack and Bobby Kennedy. There is no amount of words or fake evidence you can throw at me to convince me otherwise.

But now the " let's get'em " lynching mentality of the far right has been given way too much power in the Republican party. And in my mind it started with Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly.

Unfortunately, I think it's now spread way too far to ever reign back in again.

There is no government agency left (unbought) that will make TRUTH a requirement of US NEWS or right-wing radio talk shows.

This country has been stolen by rich assholes who make their living whipping their idiot toadies into a frenzy in order to keep them fighting what they perceive as 'the enemy' forever.

I don't see any remedy except blood in the streets and even that will have the people fighting against the people while the upper crust laugh and go right on counting their money.

Just please, if there is any power of pay-back at all, plese let history get it right for any future there might be.

A doberman and a female pit bull she had just rescued. It's amazing how much it hurts and enrages you when it's so close to you. She believes it was her room mate who the landlord rented the other room to who is a drunk and has been threatening enough to her that the doberman bit him when he physically pushed her. The doberman died but the pit bull didn't.

She has papers on the pit bull that classify it as a legal medical dog like the dogs for the blind. My co-worker suffers from depression and the dog is part of her treatment. Having the dog actually works better in many ways than it does to take medication. The dog is something she must care for and feed and walk and play with. It's a great way to stave off depression. Dogs simply won't let you not take care of them if you love them.

actions like this. We all know that, the media allows a previously unacceptable level of hateful and violent rhetoric, words that would never have been tolerated before. It's been obvious for years that irrational hatred is being pushed onto the public. It's obvious that it's been getting worse and is only going to continue without a national outrage against the process itself. It should not be allowed to hide under the banner of "politics", it's not political dialog, it's training people to hate.

We have a kitty that my son rescued while he was in Afghanistan. In the incredible, long and dangerous journey of getting this cat safely to America, people risked their lives, literally. There were Afghani's and Americans who worked together, some of them at great peril to their own safety, just to save a cat.

Bush was an animal abuser, Romney tied a dog to his car roof: later on they both are torture camp overlords and supporters. I hope that soon having an (R) next to one's name is diagnosed as the mental illness it really is.

Republican propaganda has generated an atrocity. I think this will shake up the news for the next few days.

Now that Gabby Giffords was shot out of office, I expect violence that makes the old KKK look tame. The jared Loghners and Tim McVeioghs can work in shadows.

This is breaking across the country this morning. This is from CBS news.

"I've got a gun and I know how to use it," Burris told Blue Arkansas. "If I have to protect my kids, I'll do it without hesitation."

The Associate Press confirmed with the Russellville Police Department that the campaign manager had filed a report, but they did not have any suspects at this time.

or do we NEVER hear stories about liberals doing this and painting "conservative" on someone or some thing? As someone who adopted two cats, one who was on the euthanize list at animal control, I didn't know whether to cry, vomit and scream in rage.

226. The Rwanda Genocide and hate speech on the radio.
Tue Jan 24, 2012, 01:59 PM
Jan 2012

The hatred between Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda has deep roots (colonialism, etc.) but the stage for the 100 day genocide was set largely because of non-stop hate radio referring to the Tutsis as "cockroaches". It was explained to listeners that the need to kill women and children made sense as it was important to stomp out the "cockroaches" that would breed in the future.

The killings were between neighbors and strangers alike and they were almost all carried out but machetes and other hand held implements. Unimaginable to most of the readers hear and to myself, but it happened because they were encouraged to hate the other.

The head of UN forces wanted to shut the radio station down but the US vetoed that move because they defended the hate speech as free speech.

The US is on the same path, this disgusting incident is yet more proof of that. Hate radio is like a non-stop spray of gasoline, all it takes is a spark to set off the violence that is encouraged by the hate.

Very scary stuff.

They know how their posters would cheer. Or blame the Dems for a "campaign stunt." So they just don't acknowledge it. The "party of personal responsibility", my ass.

Good luck trying to find it on Faux News, too. Their Most Read item on their site as I write this?

It doesn't make any difference what 'affiliation' the person(s) who committed this horrible crime was. This was a despicable act done by a mental case who quite obviously has checked out of reality in general.
