Report: Trudeau to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Lago after speaking against tariffs

Source: CBS News/AP

Updated on: November 29, 2024 / 6:45 PM ES

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet with President-elect Donald Trump Friday at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Canada's CBC News reported. The meeting comes in the wake of Trump's threat to impose tariffs on goods coming from Canada. Trudeau will dine with Trump at Mar-a-largo Friday night, according to senior sources who spoke to CBC News on condition they not be named due to the sensitivity of the trip.

The sources said the meeting was pushed for by Canadian officials, the Canadian broadcaster said. Trudeau's plane landed at Palm Beach International Airport at about 5:30 p.m. local time. The meeting comes after Trudeau earlier Friday cautioned that if Trump follows through on this threat to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products, he would be raising prices for Americans and hurting American businesses.

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if the countries don't stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across southern and northern borders. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders.

"It is important to understand that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There's no question about it," Trudeau said to reporters in Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada.

It is unfortunate that to understand this requires more than a reptilian mind can process. There is no possible way to convince magats that our border patrol checks those entering the US and those exiting to Canada and Mexico are checked by Canadian and Mexican border agents. Maybe going into 2026 we can campaign on how promises kept by republicans have left the camps beneath the WalMarts empty.

The Funeral of British Honour

The flowers piled before 10, Downing Street are very fitting for the funeral of British honour and, it may be, of the British Empire. I appreciate the Prime Minister’s love of peace. I know the horrors of war – a great deal better than he can. But when he returns from saving our skins from a blackmailer at the price of other people’s flesh, and waves a piece of paper with Herr Hitler’s name on it, if it were not ghastly, it would be grotesque. No doubt he has never read Mein Kampf in German. But to forget, so utterly, the Reichstag fire, and the occupation of the Rhineland, and 30 June 1934 (the Night of the Long Knives), and the fall of Austria! We have lost the courage to see things as they are. And yet Herr Hitler has kindly put down for us in black and white that programme he is so faithfully carrying out.

Letter to the editor printed in the Manchester Guardian from F. L. Lucas, a professor of literature at the University of Cambridge and a wounded veteran of World War I .

And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health and martial vigour, we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time.

Do you seriously not want other world leaders to meet with him? Trudeau had to talk to him about the tariffs.

He is going to meet with TSF to explain to him in very simple understandable terms how this will actually hurt Americans.

I don't see this as 'bending the knee' or 'kissing the ring' it is about protecting his own country.

If and when he goes back and fawns over him publicly, as 'Joey and Meeeka' did, then and only then I will be concerned. This is a world leader that is actually concerned about his own people AND the pain and suffering that it will cause to our own Country... the country that our incoming 'resident doesn't give a rats ass about! Would you all just please STOP!

"Our responsibility is to point out that he would not just be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, but he would actually be raising prices for American citizens as well and hurting American industry and business," he added.

Trudeau said Trump got elected because he promised to bring down the cost of groceries, but now he's talking about adding 25% to the cost of all kinds of products, including potatoes from Prince Edward Island.
