Paul Ryan On Yes Vote: I Came To Congress To Make Tough Decisions Not To Run Away From Them
TOM KLUDT 7:28 AM EST, WEDNESDAY JANUARY 2, 2013
Rep. Paul Ryan (R), chairman of the House Budget Committee and perhaps the most notable Republican member to support the fiscal cliff deal that passed the House of Representatives late Tuesday night, released a statement defending his vote.
The statement:
Well never get our debt under control unless we tackle its main drivers: too little economic growth and too much spending. Without presidential leadership, it will be difficult to forge bipartisan solutions to our debt and economic challenges.
Today, I joined my colleagues in the House to protect as many Americans as possible from a tax increase. We also provided certainty by making the lower tax rates permanent. The House has already passed legislation to prevent tax increases for every American family, and it is unfortunate that President Obama insisted on taking more from hardworking taxpayers. Despite my concerns with other provisions in the bill, I commend my colleagues for limiting the damage as much as possible.
The American people chose divided government. As elected officials, we have a duty to apply our principles to the realities of governing. And we must exercise prudence. We must weigh the benefits and the costs of actionand of inaction. In H.R. 8, there are clearly provisions that I oppose. But the question remains: Will the American people be better off if this law passes relative to the alternative? In the final analysis, the answer is undoubtedly yes. I came to Congress to make tough decisionsnot to run away from them.
Now, we must return our attention to the real problem: out-of-control spending. Washingtons reckless spending drives the debt. And this debt is hurting the economy today. Unless we get at the heart of the problem, Americans will face a debt crisisone that will threaten our most vulnerable in particular. It is our responsibility to prevent such a crisis.

(39,369 posts)I'm sure Ryan sees himself as engaged in a similarly noble life project. He traded bits of Scripture via cellphone with Scott Walker during the campaign, you know...

(392 posts)The GOP has been doing nothing for the past 4 years. This is great that so many voted to save 99% and let the royals pike up the tax.
The GOP has another chance to screw America and the people with the next circus act of terrorizing America with there acting like puppets for their high masters who pull their strings.

He proved that when he signed up with Rmoney. Don't be surprised if he comes out as an "Obama Democrat" one of these days.

(276 posts)His buddy/competitor for 2016 in the senate Marco Rubio, Senator from my home state of Florida voted no on the same bill. In both instances they took a gamble that they would look good down the road and they both moved to stand out from the crowd. Interesting.

This is opposed to most of today's GOP which refuses to bend to the storm.
They stand firm on their rigid ideological legs until they are cracked in half.
A man is born gentle and weak.
At his death he is hard and stiff.
Green plants are tender and filled with sap.
At their death they are withered and dry.
Therefore the stiff and unbending is the disciple of death.
The gentle and yielding is the disciple of life.
Thus an army without flexibility never wins a battle.
A tree that is unbending is easily broken.
The hard and strong will fall.
The soft and weak will overcome.(Tao Te Ching, LXXVI)

Americans didn't choose a divided government---the thug party decided a long time ago to not compromise on anything, even when the ideas originated with them. American people do know the difference, hence Obama winning a second term... and you, ryan, lost the election. Now go do your fucking job for once.
spending is not "out of control"---the rich not paying their fair share, two unpaid for wars that you voted for and a defense budget that will never see the sharp side of a blade are the problems. Social programs are not the main drivers of the deficit--it's been the policies which the thug party have been insisting on since 2000 that has put this country in the economic state it's in.
